Blackberry Visits the Yacht Club

Blackberry has now been with us for 3 weeks and we couldn’t be happier! Blackberry is best friends with our black lab – Alex and the two of them are constantly running around the house playing with their toys.

Blackberry loves to cuddle and he is always searching for someone’s lap to curl up in. Blackberry loves meal time and he “talks” to us to get us to hurry up with his dinner.

Walks are very pleasant as Blackberry walks very well on a leash and he manages to keep up with his big brother – Alex.

We took Blackberry down to the Yacht Club yesterday and he received a new bright orange life jacket to wear on the dock.

Blackberry is a perfect fit for our family and we think he really likes it here as well as you can see by the pictures attached.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide a permanent home for Blackberry!

Mouse's Many Blessings

CP Kid Mouse has joined a household with 2 other CP kids - Sweet Harmony and Zoey, and bigger pooch Cashmere, and even cat Chantilly (not pictures below).

Well, we picked up Mouse tonight at the Charlotte NC airport. What an amazing team to have worked with;the team made Mouse's adoption happen in just three days.

To Foster Mom Judy - You are the best! Mouse arrived safe and sound. Thank you for taking care of him!

To Deborah, and Liz - You constant communication with me is incredible and your follow through impeccable.

To Pamela -- your guidance and advice ensured mouse was safe and sound and properly secure for traveling - You were a wealth of information.

To the two incredible cariing men at the Continental cargo building - you treated mouse like he was a king you guys ROCK!

To the Petco store manager in Charlotte NC - We called the store and you had already closed at 9:00 pm-- but you told us to come on over anyways for a leash and harness - When you heard it was a rescue dog you wanted to help. All three employees made mouse feel special and he enjoyed the special attention.

Mouse is now resting in his crate with the girls drooling all around him.

Our hearts are filled with joy to welcome another Col Potter kid into our home. My husband and I have met wonderful foster Moms and the incredible team of folks behind the scene who put it all together. May each of you be blessed over, and over, and over!

Happy Valentine from Tucker and Zoe!!

015.JPG

Hello Col. Potter,

This is Tucker, or you might remember me as Canada. My family adopted me from you in November of 2008. I haven't sent you an update in a while, so I just wanted to stop by and say THANK YOU again for letting my family adopt me. I couldn't ask for a better life. As my dogter says, I'm spoiled rotten. I have to say I can understand why they spoil me. After all, I'm pretty cute if I do say so myself and I'm just a little "sweetheart". At least that's what my Mommy says.

I got very sick a few months ago and really had my family worried. I got lots of lumpies all over my body and ran a fever. I was so weak I had trouble walking and barely got out of my bed for weeks. But, through it all, I never stopped eating. Nope, you won't get between me and my grub. Eating's my favorite. So that the dogter could try and figure out what was wrong, he had to cut some of my lumpies out to test them. I had to take some pills, and couldn't go on walkies. In fact, we participated in a parade with Westie Rescue of Tennessee just before the holidays and I had to ride in a stroller. Can you believe it? How embarrassing! Anyway, after weeks of testing, they never figured out exactly what was wrong with me. But thank goodness, all my lumpies have gone away and my fever is down and I'm feeling great!

I'm loving life with my family, my Westie sister, Zoe and all our Westie foster furbrothers and fursisters. Life is good! Thanks so much Col. Potter for rescuing me from that awful puppy mill and giving me a chance at a wonderful life. I hope you like my Valentine's picture. That's me with my bossy sister, Zoe.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Hugs from Tucker

Feisty Zoey and Sweet Harmony Find Sisterly Love Together Furever

100_2365.JPG
ZOEY

100_2344.JPG
SWEET HARMONY

My husband and I recently loss our beloved Wheaton Terrier "Latte" on 11/4/11- Latte was to us the most precious rescued dog we have ever own. 11 years is a long time . When we adopted "Latte", we also made the decision to adopt her sister Cashmere who is still very much a part of our family . The loss of Latte was extremely emotional as it was unexpected, sudden, and abrupt.

During our grieving period I came across the Col.Potter Rescue group for Cairn Terriers. I had a Cairn growing so we wanted to pursue this opportunity and we knew rescuing would be the only option for us.

I spent a few days reading and viewing every available cairn and my heart kept bringing back to the picture of Sweet Harmony. My husband and I were drawn to her every time we went to the Col. Potter site as well as another by the name of "Keely" - I was particular interested in this spry little cairn . We decided to complete the adoption request for Sweet Harmony first - After a very quick process .. On Dec 9 th we were on our way from South Carolina to Florida to pick her up . Sweet Harmony is a "Puppy Mill" survivor.  I really dislike attaching this astigmatism to her.

Harmony is 5 years old and has lived a life of unthinkable conditions - her little dog soul was broken but yet she is simply the sweetest little girl you could ever image. Harmony is still learning to be a "free" dog and every day she is learning something new... She gives you licks and does the best ever happy dance when she wants her daily treat. When I come home from work she is right at the door performing the cutest little howl greeting and at the same time doing her dance. We love her to pieces.

Just about a week after adopting Sweet Harmony- We applied for "Keely" since we could not stop thinking about her.  So, after paperwork and interview,s we were on our way back down to Florida.. "Keely" was a surrender and only 1.5 years old.  We made the decision to retain her original name which was "Zoey " and the name fits her like a glove.

Zoey is very different from Sweet Harmony. Zoey was very bossy and for little dog of only 12 lbs her energy level was through the roof. Zoey likes all the attention and does not like to share Momma's and Dad's love and attention.

In short, Zoey was a little bully! So with firm discipline, we began to change her little domineering ways.  In just two short months, Zoey has adopted to the laws of the house . She loves to play, give kisses, and loves her new sisters Cashmere and Sweet Harmony. Zoey is particulary drawn to Cashmere. We love our kids dearly -  they bring nothing but joy into our lives and we consider it an honor to have been chosen by them.

By adopting Zoey we have learned that puppy mill dogs need  understanding, patience, kindness, love and security. They are skiddish, do not trust men, may not want to be picked up, show little emotion. These fears and behaviors will break your heart at first and make you so mad .But give them a little time and oh my the little dog who could slowly comes out.

Owner surrender dogs are easily confused -  what would you think if your family no longer wanted you?.. We have been a rescue family all our lives and our family members are the same way. Saving the life of an animal is the most satisfying and fullfilling act any human could do. They deserve a safe home, food and water, treats, lots of toys, regular trips to the vet, a warm place to sleep (our bed), attention, love and even discipline when needed. In return you for all that you give, you will come to understand the true meaning of unconditional love.

Thank you Col. Potter Cairn Rescue for two of the most lovable, endearing little kids . We look forward to providing Sweet Harmony and Zoey the best life possible. They have a forever home and their journey has just begun.

Adonis: Even More Handsome One Year Later

Adonis 5181 5-1-2011a for Ted

I want to add my thanks to everyone who helped the Famous Lovers get to CP from the Ohio hoarder. I fostered and then adopted Adonis (my second adopted foster; Nettie was my first foster and first adopted).

Adonis had his check up and vaccinations last week (clean bill of health except for the luxating patellas). He is the most precious boy to me. He and Nettie get along great. He still has trust/touch issues but they are so much better now. When I get home from work he cries in delight and bounces and gives lots of kisses.

He's still working on his housetraining - he's quite the stubborn and independent boy cairn, so much like a girl cairn, LOL. He is no lapdog, but will play attack my toes under the throw. He's not allowed on the couch, but sneaks up there occasionally when Nettie is down. He's a very smart little boy and I love him dearly. Thank you everyone for helping to save him.

Celebrating Two Gotcha Days in Massachusetts!

We are happy to be celebrating 2 Gotcha Days at my house!

MIAWe adopted Mia FKA Roselle from CP in 2009. She was only 7 months old & one of the last of the Windy City Kids to be rescued. When I caught sight of her in a crate in Mo Kesler's van, it was love at first sight! She is a beautiful "dish rag" cairn (Aunt Mary Noll says) with shades of red and wheaton with a dark snout. Her favorite thing to do is chase & eat (yuck) birds, chew on nylabones & drive the old cairns crazy!! Thank you CP for rescuing her & introducing me to the greatest group around!!

034
Last year we adopted 15 year old BZ from a patient of mine who was going through a divorce & couldn't take her to the apartment she rented. When she asked about surrendering her to CP, I offered to take her instead. BZ is the smartest, sweetest, most alpha cairn I've ever met! I brought her to the vets yesterday for her checkup & no one can believe she's almost 16 yrs. old! She is in excellent health, except we are going to watch one of her molars which may need extraction (I am a dental hygienist, so I'll keep a close eye on it)

Happy Gotcha Day to my fiesty, lovable, happy, wonderful girlies!!! Life wouldn't be the same without you both!! Lisa, MA

Davy Finds the Perfect Furever Home

Davy_Kali_and_Derek

Foster Mom Deb says:
Well, I had to say goodbye to my sweet little Davy today.
He was adopted by a wonderful couple from Oklahoma, and he will have two older Cairn brothers as well. I think it will be the perfect home for him, and I have to feel good
about that!
Here's an adoption day pic of Davy with his new mom and dad. Enjoy!

Tess: From Famous Lover to Famously Loved

One year ago this month (2/13/11 to be exact), a batch of 14 Cairns came into Col. Potter – Named the "Famous Lovers" because of their Valentine’s Day arrival. Aphrodite, Paola, Adonis, Cyrano, Heloise, Echo, Francesca, Roxanne, Narcissus, Pierrot, Abelard, Pierette, Juliet, and Romeo.

They all grab you, but one of them stole our hearts, and as soon as we saw this photo, we applied to adopt her.

VERY PREGNANT Aphrodite - At the shelter in OH where all 124+ dogs were taken after being seized from a hoarder. We say + because several of them, were pregnant, one giving birth at the shelter that very day!

Aphrodite waited until she was safe and warm in CP’s loving arms to bring her six puppies into the world, lovingly fostered in Missouri by Stacey and Alice Wagers. Her pups were named Yertle the Turtle, Lori the Lorax, Star Bellied Sneetch, Mulberry, Marvin K. Mooney and Horton, all after Dr. Suess characters.

Aphrodite, NOW TESS - at home in BuddyWorld at Calliope – she is our little “Princess Angel”.
We GAVE her our beloved Miri’s (fka CP’s Lena ) birthday (February 10) and estimate her to be 2 years old. Miri crossed the Rainbow Bridge November 22, 2010 and we believe sent us Tess to fill that hole in our hearts.

SO - A happy second birthday and first gotchya day to you Miss Tess Ami at Calliope.

WE are so lucky to have you!

Snow-loving Scout

Former Foster Dad says: Sister nka Scout spent almost nine years in a Mill so updates like this make my day.

http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/2322484/1943786179/name/IMG_0172.MOV

Above is a really short video link of Scout in her Christmas present. I've never used sweaters before, but the wind off our little lake can be quite cold in the winter and with her hair still so short I figured it wouldn't hurt. People stop all the time and comment on how cute she is. We haven't had to use it a lot because our winter has been pretty warm.

The one big snow fall this year gave us about 6 in. and only lasted a few days. Scout loved it! She dashed in and out the dog door and all around the yard. I try to get her out every day for a walk down to the lake. It's about 20 min. there and back. She is still afraid of big trucks, tree work, any thing loud. I just keep taking her out and eventually it will all seem normal to her.

In the house she's getting to be quite the little Cairn. If I pet Max, she jumps all over me, even biting my hands to get me to pet her. She flops on her back, pawing the air. It's the cutest thing. She's like a little stuffed animal come to life.

A few weeks ago she caught one of the shrews that live in the ivy along the fence. She checks every day for them. And if a squirrel dares to come in the yard, she is off like a shot! The other day, when I pulled into the garage, I could hear her barking in the house. She never makes a sound, so I was happy to hear her protecting her home.

She is such a joy, we feel very lucky to have found her. I hope that your winter goes by quickly and that Jacket and Toggle make steady progress and turn out as well as Scout did.

Sarut - One Wonderful Year Later

Sarut on her Piano-keyboard quilt

Well last week was Sarut's 1st anniversary with us. Since the very first night of arrival she has remained the perfect little angel. I will NEVER forget that day, pacing about anxiously waiting for the time to pass until it was finally time to leave for the airport. Still, we arrived there way too early. Daddy couldn't even work all day to make the time go more quickly and had to come home early. I can't believe it has been a year already! On the other hand, Sarut behaves as though she has been in our family since the beginning. She is doing so well and is the happiest little girl all the time! She's truly the most well-behave furkid and just so affectionate...we love her to pieces STILL!!!!!! Thank-you all so much for this most priceless jewel.

Gruffyn Tales

Foster Mom Bonnie sent to great update from Gruffyn's furever Mom:

Unfortunately no photos...I'm sure everyone remembers how much Gruffy hated to have his pictue taken while here. ;) But, wonderful news from Gruffy's new home with former mill girl Missy Tinker:

One might think Gruffy has lived with us his whole life. After investigating the entire house he settled down as if he owned the place. His favorite place to nap is a back cushion on the sofa, they are squishy down like pillows and he has worked it into a "well" that fits him perfectly.

Missy is acting like his mother! He was in his red jammies for the first time in a while and she had to check him out very carefully to make sure they fit him properly. Gruffy whines when he see the cat and Missy has to go comfort him. Head scritching and tummy rubs may start out with Gruffy on my lap and Missy beside us until Gruffy slides down on top of her. Neither one seems to mind.

Don't know how much weight Missy has lost, but she can now wear her pink polka dot parka: Gruffy feels a little heavier, his ribs and spine don't feel so prominent.

The most interesting thing about Gruffy is the change in his color. The dark gray/wheaten patch now covers most of his left flank and the fur up the middle of his back is turning gray. The fur is still fine and thin and I don't think he will ever get back a thick coat like Missy. Oh and I am amazed at how high he lifts his leg to pee. Soooo high he almost topples over.

He and Missy are getting very close. Right now they are sleeping side by side on the sofa.

He looks so jaunty when we go for a walk, with his head held high and his tail at attention. It's like he knows he is a spiffy dude. Eat your hearts out all you girl dog divas!
-----------------------------------------
I (Foster Mom) asked if she might think about returning Gruffy as we miss him sooooo much and
here is her reply: Ummm, talk to me about returning Gruffy in about 30 years or so.

It makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time.

Happy Gotcha Day Jill!

MARYS JILL 6

This week, Jill celebrated her 7th gotcha day.
Mom Mary says:
She came to us as a very scared mill momma, but with a lot of love and patience, she has blossomed into a Cairn princess of sorts. She is still timid around people she doesn't know, and isn't very sociable with dogs she doesn't know. No trips to the dog park for her! She is my heart dog. She is now 13 years old and her hearing and sight are failing, but she still LOVES mealtime ( barks because mom isn't fast enough and does a little happy dance when her food is ready)!
She also loves taking a good nap, and snuggling with mom.

Padraig Toto Lee Moore aka Mr. Handsome

Padraig came into Col. Potter as a sad little fellow who lost both his owners within several weeks of each other. I loved having him as a foster and he played well with my Kiara while Ruthie disdained him.  But Col. Potter kids don't stay sad for long because they always find the most perfect furever homes.  Padraig, now called Toto, lives in North Carolina and has a "Weemie" furbro as well as a Mom who loves him dearly. Just look at this recent photo - be still my heart!

Former Foster Mom Lynn B. in KC, KS

Dear Lynn,
Catey wants us to say Thank You for the blue dog.
She hasn't put it down since she opened it, only to eat.
Catey has been a joyous addition to our house.
She has learned so much in the last two years.
We have taken her on several trips, to the mountains and sea.
Last year we traveled to the sea shore in Oregon and this
year it was to Colorado for a week with family.

We are sending you a picture of her with her new dog.
She has yet to de-stuff any animals but loves to de-squeak them.

All our Thanks and Love,

Hello from Coco's family fka Mudslide

Furever Mom Kristis sent this great update to Mudslide's Foster Mom Chris:

Just wanted to give you an update on Coco with some pictures. We're getting ready to drive home to Kentucky next week. Coco and Peanut are both coming along for the long drive. She really enjoys going home with us. It gives her a chance to get even more attention than she already gets! She loves visiting her grandparents and her fur cousins. Lots of playtime during the holidays for her!

Coco starts basic obedience next month. We have already taught Coco "sit" on our own and it only took her less than a week to learn! I thought it would take longer since she can be a bit stubborn, but she learned very fast. She will even sit without a treat and when our friends tell her to sit. Good to know that we will not necessarily need to use treats to train Coco and that she will do tricks for a nice head rub. This is the complete opposite of Peanut who is VERY food driven. We always say that Coco eats to live while Peanut lives to eat.

We were going to try and train Coco on our own, but she is VERY stubborn when it comes to the command "come". She hears us when we tell her come, but she acts like she can't hear us and doesn't see us and continues to patrol the yard for geckos and frogs. She sees keeping the geckos and frogs away from the house as her job. If she sees one, there is no getting her attention back to you unless you walk over and pick her up. We have had to fish her out of the bushes many many times.

Other than the training issues Coco is doing great! We are sooo happy to have her and couldn't imagine life without her. She is such as sweet dog and has such a funny personality. She can bark/howl in all sorts of ranges. It's funny to hear the noises that come out of her mouth sometimes. We're not sure whether to call the noises she makes a bark or howl or groan. Very funny sounds! It makes us laugh.

A Turkey Day Poem

T’was the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees....
Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.

May your yams be delicious. may your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all !!!

Abbie's Thanksgiving Message

I arrived in my forever home on the 13th of November last year.
Tomorrow will be my second Thanksgiving here. Last year I sent CP a message telling them how grateful I was to have been rescued, fostered, and put in such a loving forever home. I thought life couldn't be better. Then in April, my mom and dad adopted Gem. Life with my sister has been wonderful. This year I am especially grateful to have Gem in my life and for all the good care I receive from my human family. I am
also eagerly awaiting a taste of that delicious turkey. Won't Gem be surprised!
Thank you again CP for all the wonderful work you do saving dogs like me.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Mary - Cairn Sweetness and So Much More!

Today, my adopted Cairn Mary turned 12 years old! In the fall of 2005, she was liberated and the wonderful people at Colonel Potter gave her the care she needed (and the name Mary, which I didn't change) until she found her forever home with me and her sometimes-grouchy Cairn sister, Ginger, on November 6, 2005. She was fostered in Wisconsin and adopted when I lived in Chicago, and now we all live in Dallas, where the winters are much kinder to little dog paws.

I thought today was a good day to give you this update and thank you for the opportunity to have such a wonderful little Cairn be a part of my life for the past six years. She just had a check-up at the vet two weeks ago, and is still going strong, albeit a tiny little bit slower. A clean bill of health, and a sweet disposition to boot - what more could a proud Cairn parent ask?

I am attaching a picture, just in case you would like to have another happy ending to add to your lovely list of successes.

Thank you again for allowing me the chance to have Mary be a part of my life.

Arkie Fox Sends an Amusing Update

Hi mom. Thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a great birthday even though Dad was out of town. I got a birthday muffin and a new toy. And yes I'm sharing my toy with Merlin and Lady G.

Later that week I snuck up and got Mom's new earmuffs. Merlin was chasing me, Lady G was chasing Merlin and Mom was chasing all three of us. It was a blast.

This morning I had to drive off those pesky deer again. A backyard warrior's work is never done.

Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving. It's my second one here and Mom & Dad are going to celebrate with just us this year. Mom's soooo excited. They're not traveling and it's her first time to make Thanksgiving Dinner all by her self.

Well gotta go and make sure those pesky deer haven't come back.

Love,

Arkie Fox

Kerry - and FurSis Kyna - Stop to Smell the Flowers of Furever!

Kerry is slowly intergrating herself into her new home. She is so funny because she will seek me out, but then when I look at her and give her a big HI, she goes running. But the kisses keep coming. When I lie on the couch, she even kisses my toes!

She is becoming more and more brave each day...by that I mean, exploring her new home. She has three "safe" places, the couch, the corner of the office, and her bed. However, my Cairn, Kyna, learned how to break out of that thing years ago, and the first day that I left them alone, Kyna free, and Kerry in the "bed"...we actually call it the "pup tent..." I arrived home and Kerry was out and sitting on our bed and Kyna was on her bench. Both of them looking like...what? we didn't do anything. Very, very funny! And a couple of times we've both gotten up in the morning and left the dogs in the bedroom and Kyna will be sitting by the pup tent waiting for Kerry to come out!!!

She has almost mastered going up and down the stairs...all 14 of them, and she does really well with it. Last night she was a hoot. For some reason when I sat on the couch, she got really feisty and we started "wrestling." We were laughing so hard at her!! Just about every morning we sit down on the floor with both of them and have fun "wrestling." And she is even responding to her new name. I say Kerry, and she looks at me with those big brown eyes...heart melting!!!

Kerry is an absolute joy, and more and more of her personality shines each day. I'm thankful for Colonel Potter and this lovely addition to our family. And thankful for all of you that made it possible.

Cheers!

Thanks to Deb S for this update and photo:

A Tale of Two Doggies...or Four

A quick update to those of you who know that the Krebs Kennel has gotten delightfully out of hand.

My first-ever foster, Cyrano of the Famous Lovers, was an absolute doll. As I told my mentor, if he had been my third or fourth foster, I might have known not to ever let him go. But I was new and idealistic and I did...however his adoptive home did not work out. Happily Col. Potter allowed me to bring him back to Kansas and he is now Mulligan, my "do-over" dog.

It quickly became clear that, at age 3, Mulligan has far more energy and orneriness than my 11-year old pair -- Bogey (CPs Brigand) and Pearl (a rescue Westie). I set out to find a pal for the new boy and Col. Potter graciously allowed me to adopt "Amazing Grace" or Gracie!

Little 3-year old Gracie has had quite a lot of turmoil in her life and was a bit spooked when we shuffled her again. But she has bonded like glue to Mulligan and has special relationships with each of the oldsters. It's all helping her to sublimate her timidity and enhance her assertiveness!
So now we're headed into the winter months with a houseful of furry friends. We couldn't be happier -- THANK YOU, Col. Potter!!!

Gustav - now Gus - is a Jersey Boy

Gus here,

This will be quick 'cuz Mom helped me write a long note and we lost it when we tried to add some pictures.
Had a good day, up early when Mom went to check on Sami, but she is sick so didn't go to school. So...we got to go outside and eat early and then go back to sleep for awhile. I've been good with my potty stops, no accidents in the house or crate and if asked to go out I run right to the back door, and I've gone to the door a couple of times myself. I even went through the doggy door a couple of times. Mom gave Abby and me brand new Kongs with kibble and peanut butter in them. Of course, I had mine in a crate, because I've been told that Abby is the boss and will steal stuff from me. Mine was great and I think Abby's was too.

So, besides the fact that Mom says she didn't get anything done today because of watching us and reading on the computer, it was a good day. Sami's playing with us now. She just had us in a tug-a-war with socks tied together, but Abby's smarter than me and won, getting a little to close for Mom's comfort so that was the end of the game for tonite.

Gotta go, all of my human family is sniffing and coughing and need some rest. Check out the great pictures that Mom got of us today. Abby's the biggin' and I'm the little guy.

Lub,

Gus (the newest Jersey Boy)
