On January 19th, Chuck (CP McQueen) celebrated being with us for 2 full years!!!  I thank God for him every day!  I can't tell you how much he is loved in our home by all of our family members.  I can't imagine not having Chuck in my life.  

He is still a "talker" and he makes me laugh often.  He's a lot better in the car now, and on the leash.  It's hard to believe he's a Southern boy because he absolutely loves the snow!  You should see the handsome coat Santa brought him this Christmas!

Chuck is also a snuggler!  He loves to sit on the couch with the family and friends to watch TV (He loves watching football with the boys!).

Chuck's itchiness has been minimal, and pretty much non-existent in the wintertime. Although we still keep his crate in our bedroom, just in case he wants to go in it (which he doesn't anymore), last year his "Daddy" bought him a beautiful bed of his own with his name on it in big bold letters, and he sleeps in it beside our bed every night.  But before bed, he enjoys an hour or so of time with us in the "big bed" as we read and/or watch TV before lights out.

I can't help but give him millions of kisses every day - and he indulges me!  He gives me sweet kisses on my nose every day too.  I just love him so much!!!  I can't even express how my heart overflows with love for him.  He is such a blessing to us, and we know we are the luckiest fur-parents on earth!

Chuck sends his love, but he wants you to know he is very happy in his forever home and he knows he is loved and cared for!

Madeira “Maddie” Moves on as “Penny”!

Madeira aka “Maddie”, who will soon be known as "Penny," left today with her New Mom and Grand Mom. They are heading from sunny Florida to a somewhat chillier clime in North Carolina, where she will meet her New Dad in her Forever Home.

As you can see by her pictures, she has an ecstatic New Mom and a proud and comforting Grand Mom… who says she has told New Mom she has to send pictures!

Foster Mom and Maddie shared a sweet, final embrace...  That final embrace is always so hard, isn't it?  Sometimes it seems that the ones who have been the most troubled and difficult become the hardest to let go after they have finally surrendered their defenses and fears and allowed themselves to be loved and cared for.  They take such big chunks of your heart with them when they leave…

Orchid Takes a Big Step!

We adopted Miss Orchid at 10 yrs. old.  She was a Foster that came to us so scared and timid she would rather stay outside, in any kind of weather, than be in the house with us.  We had to lock the doggie door to make her stay in sometimes! 

She hated the washer, dryer, and dishwasher noises - and still does - and runs upstairs to sleep when they are on.  She doesn’t mind the lawnmower any more.  And sometimes if we drop things she doesn’t run or flinch. 

There was never much interest in her, and I did many, many write ups for the Col. Potter’s site for her as she progressed.   After we had her for several months, we realized she had become comfortable with us and decided to adopt her for Christmas 2011.  We just didn’t want to make her have to adjust again. 

As I said, she still doesn’t like certain things, but she comes for loves and kisses and belly rubs from us all on her own!  She will look us in the eye and you know she adores you!  She runs around with a toy in her mouth when I come home from work, squeaking it has fast she can – Moms home, Moms home, Yeah! 

Anyone who has met Orchid would not believe what she accomplished this past weekend!  Keeping in mind that she didn’t play with toys, didn’t engage the others, didn’t want to be touched.  If people visited, she ran upstairs and retreated to her cage.   Well, we were gone over New Years and my birthday, so several of our kids and grandkids came over last weekend.  Five extra people here, but the two Fosters (Marlin and Violet Tallulah) had gone to their wonderful Forever Homes.  To our amazement, Miss Orchid stayed downstairs with all of us!  Joe & I kept looking at each other, astounded that she was still hanging around with all of us!  She was comfortable and happy!  I cried after everyone left and Joe and I could talk about it. 

She gives her kisses freely now, and we just love her!   She is our little cutie and we can’t imagine her not being here!  She has a few other nicknames, “Funny Bunny”, "Ballerina Girl” when she dances for her meals, she almost does pirouettes when meals are being served!

She even allows me to pick her up and put her on our bed when I get ready for work each morning, and give her scritches and belly rubs.  She doesn’t always sleep under my dresser at night, sometimes just on the doggie blankets on the floor next to me (Next goal: on the bed with the rest of us, LOL!).

Minnow Makes her way Forever Home!

Minnow finds New Dad’s lap quite acceptable!

Minnow just left with her new family and the house seems very quiet now. 

We all met in the back yard, and, after lots of sniffs and tail-wagging, we knew that this was a perfect match!  Of course, little Miss Bossy insisted on having first dibs on all the petting, and growled to think she had to share, but it was pretty clear early on that there were plenty of pets available for everyone.

Once inside, she voluntarily got up into New Dad’s lap and they had a little quiet time while New Sis found a comfortable doggie bed and snuggled into it. 

Minnow’s New Mom and Dad are great people who have done a wonderful job with Heidi, their 11 year old Rescue Beagle, and I know they will be very good for Minnow.

Hula La Lights Up her Forever Home!

Hula’s tail is busy wagging!

My little diabetic/vision impaired foster girl flew from balmy Florida early in January to live with her new family in Michigan.  It was a very long travel day but she did really well.  She is such a delightful, easy-going girl and lets nothing fluster her! 

…and wagging!

Her new Mom and I were worried about how Hula would react to the cold and snow.  Turns out, when she came out of her travel crate, she dove into the snow and thoroughly enjoyed it!  Her new Mom and Dad made sure she would have everything she needed to feel welcome – sweaters, toys, and the exact food and treats she received at my house. 

…and wagging!!!

Well, based on the pictures, I think this has been an easy transition for her!  She’s met Walther (another CP cairn) and the two cats and everyone is getting along just fine.  New Mom says it’s like she’s lived there her whole life.

I’ve been getting almost daily updates and pictures and I hope they never stop coming!  Hula is thoroughly enjoying her new life!

Hula’s vision is somewhat impaired by her diabetic cataracts.  She absolutely loves fetching a ball, but sometime can’t find it once it stops moving.  Her New Mom found a blinking ball and Hula has no problem finding that one!

She looks so happy!  I couldn’t have asked for a better forever home for this sweet little girl!

Mildred Shakes up the Sunshine State!

Katie Mildred (fka CP’s Mildred) is a busy girl!  She has already gotten Woody (fka CP’s Zinger) running in the back yard, chasing squirrels. Woody is now sleeping on the couch.  He is worn out!

I brought Katie in to take a rest from running in the back yard, but she went right out the dog door!  She was shown that door twice and is already an expert!

She loves running after squirrels!  Woody runs after her and they search the bushes together.  The lizards are in there running around as well.  The neighbors well has a broken pipe, so there is water in our back yard. Guess where Katie was?  Laying in that water, cooling off!  It is warm today about 75.  Looks like she may like swimming in the Summer.

Woody tolerates her well, although he keeps looking at me to be reassured.  I have been giving him lots of attention so he doesn't get jealous.  I noticed Woody pushed ahead of her to go in the door first.

Day two, Katie was awake at 5 AM, ready to go.  I took her out to pee and then hoped she would sleep for a while.  Oh no, she told me to look at her schedule, it was time for breakfast!  So I gave her breakfast.  Then she told me she goes back to bed, and she did.

Funny how they are such creatures of habit!

Kelsey fka Milori Lights Up Long Island!

Kelsey fka Milori learning to love her new life!

We have a great update on Kelsey, the former Milori: She’s doing fantastic!

When we first got her, she was afraid of many things, garbage cans, cars, boxed Christmas gifts, and unexpected noises.  She warmed up to us quickly, but took a bit longer to get used to the house.  Even doorways were intimidating.

But so much has changed in the past six weeks!  She’s become much braver, and is now a curious and playful cairn!  Anything new, whether at home or in the neighborhood, now gets a cautious sniff, but a sniff nonetheless.  Kelsey has thought about chasing squirrels, but hasn’t yet done it.  She is, however, an expert at catching leaves blowing along the sidewalk!  She chases them down, pounces, and briefly carries her trophies in her mouth.   On very windy days, this leads to a cycle of catch and release, and catch and release...  So much fun in just one leaf!

 The other activity with which Kelsey amuses us we started calling the “Good Morning, Happy Dog Dance”.   She races to the end of the leash, then circles back, running in tight little circles.  This can go on for a minute or two, and is a sight to behold!  If we ever manage to get this on video, it’s sure to be a YouTube hit!

In just the past few days, Kelsey has started to play with pull toys and engage us in little tugs of war.  And she’s becoming mischievous, trying to steal pens, phones, and sections of the newspaper.  Today, she untied a shoe one of us was wearing!

We realized something odd about Kelsey about two weeks ago.  She’s six years old, but she’s also a puppy.  She’s exploring her new, much wider world, and trying to figure out how everything works.

Kelsey remains as sweet as ever, and likes nothing better than to sit with her people. We’re happy to oblige.

Jr. Ambassador Michaela Rivera

Michaela Rivera is a 10-year-old in Massachusetts; well actually, she will be 11 on January 21st. Like most other preteens, Michaela has a birthday wishlist, and of course, that wishlist is posted to her Facebook page HERE.

But what makes Michaela’s list special is that all of the items she has requested are related to her pet rescue projects. This is how Michaela describes her ambitious project:

My ultimate goal is to start an animal rescue/food and supply pantry of my own, to save as many animals lives as I can with letters to the government and city officials, and to work with therapy dogs

Michaela has a love for animals that runs deep; she was named Jr Ambassador for the Worcester Animal Rescue League and she is now on a mission to get proper medical supplies to all shelters so no animal has to wait for a rescue group to pull them.She wants to make sure there is a tougher penalty for animal cruelty and her ultimate goal is to get shelter animals into their forever homes. She will be hosting lemonade stands yard sales and different drives to collect items for the shelter she will also be contacting state reps for many states to get tougher laws passed.

Whew ... what a little spitfire! Michaela seems to be a money-raising wizard, as well as a great project developer. Currently she is making baskets of needed items for shelter animals.

Maisie's Gotcha Day - Anniversary #5

Hi – Maisie here for my annual check-in to let you know how things are going . Today is my 5th Gotcha Day. This has been a really good year. I lost a couple of pounds, so am looking very sleek and svelte. This is especially good when I’m trying to attract my boy friend Rhett, the Leonberger. I’ve also got my eye on a couple of boxers.

I’m a very busy girl. I live with my mom Sheryl and her mom just north of Boston. We also have 2 kitties and my best buddy Murry who’s also a cairn. He’s very social, so I don’t have to worry when we meet people as I’m still a bit shy. Although mom says to tell you that this past summer I let 3 different people I didn’t even know pet me. We went to the CRAP last summer. It was kind of a long ride, but so much fun to hang with the other cairns. Life is good here north of Boston. We go for walks most every day. In the summer we go to the beach and I have a little pool for cooling off in the yard. Now that’s it’s snowing Murry likes to go skating.We had a special spa day just before Christmas. Mom always grooms us, but this time she gave us a special treat. I wasn’t even nervous. Mom says she’s sending some photos so you can see our gang.

Happy 2013 to all my cairn cousins! – Maisie the Princess(Seems like only yesterday when I met Maisie at Karen O’s in Arizona. Maisie is 10 now and is still our very special girl. For those of you new to Col Potter, a link to Maisie’s story “From a Pauper to a Princess” is here.

Instant Oatmeal Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

A really easy dog treat recipe that I made from a breakfast accident when I added too much water to a packet of instant oatmeal - but the girls loved them.

Add to a Mug:
1 packet of instant oatmeal - any flavor is fine
About 1 cup of water (yes it will be soupy)
About 2 - 3 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter - smooth is better
Wheat Flour - keep adding till you have a good consistency

Roll out on parchment paper or a well-floured marble surface.
Cut into any shape you desire - the furkids don't care!!
Bake at 350 until cookies are dry, turn off oven and leave cookies in oven overnight until well-dried (or until the furkids DEMAND a taste - whichever comes first)
Store in refrigerator (if there are any left - hah!!)

My small made more than I expected. Of course, you can increase incredients as you see fit. A food processor would also be handy, but I just used my cereal spoon to mix!

Cindy N's Sweet Potato Apple Dog Biscuits

My girls LOVE these doggie treats (good enough for people too) that Cindy N sent. 

She says: I make batches and freeze them (I do not use the parchment paper - it's yucky!!)

Instead, I dust the cookie sheets with wheat flour - works great .I also use fresh mint not dried. I purchased my apple peeler of QVC and love it! It peels and cores. Everything used in my recipe is organic.

Sweet Potato Apple Dog Biscuits
Ingredients: 

3/4 cup cooked plain mashed sweet potatoes
3 tablespoons chicken or beef broth (or water)
2 cups organic 100% whole wheat pastry flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 cup fine yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup finely chopped mint
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and grated

Method:
Preheat oven to 325°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together sweet potatoes and broth. Add flour, cornmeal, mint and apples and stir until combined. Knead the dough a few times until it holds together. Roll out half of the dough on a generously floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick. Use (2-inch to 4-inch) cookie cutters to cut out treats. Transfer to baking sheets; reroll and cut the scraps. Bake until dried and just slightly golden on the bottoms, 35 to 40 minutes. Turn off the oven, leave oven door ajar and let the treats cool and dry out in the oven for 1 to 2 hours. Store in an airtight container up to 1 week.

Nayla - fka Fascination

I was lost and heartbroken after losing my beloved Cairn, Ruby, to cancer in October, 2011 one month and one day shy of her 10th birthday. My home and my life were not the same without my Ruby. I gave myself time and realized I NEEDED and wanted another little furgirl in my life. My sister and I drove from Pittsburgh to Virginia Beach to bring my little Nayla fka Fascination/Na Na to her forever home. I loved this little girl as soon as I saw her picture on Col. Potter website and could not wait to learn more about her. After speaking with Nayla’s wonderful Foster Mother Judy, I felt she was the little furgirl for me. My feelings were confirmed when we met. Nayla is a sweet little girl who amuses me daily with her antics. She loves to empty her toy box and take certain toys to “her” room. She has so many toys on her bed, I do not know how there is any room for her! If I decide to put some toys back in the toy box, sure enough Nayla has her own agenda and they reappear on her bed! On several occasions, she has been spotted carrying her Official Col. Potter Blanket from the kitchen to her room - her head held high, so she does not trip. Nayla makes me laugh and has quickly become my little shadow inside and outside the house. She loves to take walks and meet the neighbors and learn her new neighborhood. I installed a doggy door for her and she has mastered coming in and out of the house. This very special little girl has brought so much back into my life. I cannot wait to get home from work so we can spend the evening together. Nayla loves to ride in the car and helps me run errands on the weekend. I thank Judy, Nayla’s Foster Mom and everyone at Col. Potter. God Bless all of you for giving me the opportunity to share my life and home with Nayla.

MICK IS "BEST DOG" AT MOM'S WEDDING

Mom and Dad decided to get married on the beach here in South Carolina
and insisted that by brother Mr Spock, also a Cairn Terrier and I be the "Best Dogs"
We even got Black bow ties to wear,although it did slip a liittle and were part of the
wedding party. We were so good, everyone complimented us on how cute we were
and how well behaved we were. Mr Spock got to carry the rings because he's older
(I could have done it because I have learned to be a very responsible dog though.)
I did need a rest after all the activity though.
Life has sure changed since last March when I was rescued by Col Potter.
I now have my own bed, and I don't go in the house.
I get walkies 3 times a day (except when its too hot in the summer then only 2,
but I go in the yard-on the flowers. I met my first butterfly last week,but it wouldn't stay
it jut kept flitting around my nose and Mom and Dad kept laughing. You know it's great
being a dog !!!
