OhBee fka CP BooBoo Blizzard a Canadian Forever!

Written by OB fka CP BooBoo Blizzard

OhBee fka CP BooBoo Blizzard aka OB

Hello, all my Col. Potter Friends!  Hello, Foster Mom!  You all remember me as CP BooBoo Blizzard, that handsome devil of a Foster who came in from the cold last January, but now I answer to “OhBee” or “OB” for short (…heeheehee!), and now I’m a Canadian!

Anyway, when I arrived at my Foster Home, I discovered that I had a lot of adjusting to do, living in a House and having brothers and sisters, but I put my mind into it (with a lot of help from Foster Mom!) and by March I was ready to move again to my Forever home – in Canada!

I have to admit, this new adjustment hasn’t been nearly as difficult, thanks to all of Foster Mom’s work, but also thanks to my new Family!  They are great!  My new Canadian lifestyle includes going to the beach, going kayaking, boating, paddle-boarding, swimming, and, of course, there is still lots of snow and ice up here!

I love to ride up front to navigate…

…but I’m also a good sternman!

My Mom thinks I’m “a funny little boy” and she is so happy that I get along so great with my new sisters.  I also love to sing!  …Well, maybe it’s more of a howl, but it’s full throated and music to Mom’s ears – most of the time!

Being a Canadian Cairn is great!

Anyway, Mom says to say “Thanks!” again to the excellent Volunteers at Col. Potter – and especially my Foster Mom, Christy C. – because I wouldn't have this great new Life - and my family wouldn’t have Me - if it wasn't for you all!!!

Manny fka CP Manassas after 3 Years in Forever!

Contributed by his Mom

Manny fka CP Manassas

I adopted Manny three years ago, in August, 2010, and he's the love of my life!  I didn't want to confuse him further, so I kept the nickname “Manny” for Col Potter's name which was “Manassas”.

Manny is the only dog I've had who LOVES his toys!  He shows this love by taking all toys out of his toy box and strategically placing them all over the house so one is always within reach.  Messy house; happy dog.  We even sleep with a menagerie of favorites that he enjoys stalking, torturing, and killing as a restful sleep appetizer.

Nice catch!

Well, I was out shopping and saw some Gund toys.  One, a little worm critter, looked about Manny size and it made a cute giggling noise.  It was the same price as doggie toys so home it came.  As soon as he heard the giggle noise, Manny was smitten... and determined to kill it! Best toy EVER!

I wonder if it will move on its own…
What goes up…
…must be caught!
So, there!
…and There!

He captured it, tossed it in the air like a Hacky Sack, played keep-away and tug of war!  If I captured it, he wouldn't take his eyes off it until he seized it once more.  He kept his eyes on the prize!  When the time was right, he pounced.  Then with a shark-like attack, he went for the kill!  Poor Wormy!  First he lost an eye.  Then I found wormy entrails around the house.  His giggle was but a memory...  "I am Manny! No critter escapes these mighty jaws!"  What a guy!

Mom?  Can we go shopping again???

Many Thanks to Foster Mom, Susan M. and Col. Potter for rescuing Manny!  He's a little hunk o' luv!

Sweeney ~ A Col. Potter Angel Forever

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

CP Sweeney, Truly Loved for 8 years and Forever
Sweeney was a very special little boy who was rescued by two equally special Col. Potter Volunteers after seven years in a commercial breeder’s cage, and had his first taste of love via a McDonald's plain burger (aka, a “Sweeney Burger”) in the safety of his crate in the back seat of their car.

Sweeney had a crumpled ear, crusty eyes, a hernia, and “man” issues that needed to be resolved, but his sweetness was pure, and the loving care of his two Foster Moms brought out his best, guiding him to a wonderful Forever home where he thrived in every way!  Sadly, Sweeney was diagnosed with abdominal cancer a few years ago, but he continued to live a full, loving life to the end when he became an angel last week at the age of 15.

When you look at his beautiful, sweet face, it is hard to imagine someone stuffing him in a wire cage for seven long years, hauling him out only when needed to service a mill momma in heat…

Blessings to these courageous Volunteers who rescued this darling boy, and the loving Foster Moms who nurtured him, and most especially to his perfect Forever Home who gave him unconditional love every moment of every day they shared, giving Sweeney, on balance, a truly Wonderful Life.

May we all remember Sweeney’s story and feel the inspiration of his sweet spirit as we continue to Volunteer to do all we can to make a difference in the lives of his Cairn cousins.

Bea, Neha & Zander Celebrate Gotcha Day!

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

Zander, Bea & Neha Celebrate their Triple Gotcha Day!

Bea, Neha, and Zander are all Col. Potter Rescued Cairns, happily Forever in South Carolina, and they share everything - including their Gotcha Day!

Bea, who will be 14 years old in February, and Neha, who will be 12 years old in January, bonded while in Foster care and were very lucky to find a wonderful Forever home together, 5 years ago.

Mom & Dad then fostered Zander, a starving stray with extreme hair loss, who was deathly sick, and, after nursing him back to health and working through many training issues, Foster Mom and Dad ultimately flunked, adopting Zander officially on Bea and Neha’s Gotcha Day.  Zander is 9 years old now, and has been officially Forever Home for 4 years, a great testament to the power of love!

Happy Gotcha Day, Bea, Neha and Zander!

Sonny Boy Celebrates One Year in Forever!

Written by CP Sonny Boy

Sonny Boy here!

Sonny Boy here!  Can you believe it?  I have been here on the East Coast with Mom and Dad for a Whole year now!  What a year!

To begin with, 365 days ago, Foster Mom, way back there on the West Coast, took me for a long drive, and then she handed me over to some strange people at a big airline building, and I had no idea what to expect next.  My crate and I got moved around and carried into this great big shiny thing called an airplane, and later I could feel it moving, but I couldn’t see anything.  I decided to lay quietly in my crate, on my beautiful red towel, and I prayed that Foster Mom would come back and get me soon…  Well, that didn’t happen.

I felt safe with my special red towel that smelled like Mom and Dad

Instead, some other strange people carried me out from the plane after it stopped moving, and they brought me to another strange building.  Then the most amazing thing happened!  All of a sudden, the smell of my red towel got stronger!  It was like magic!  I looked out and there was Mom and Dad – and they smelled just like my red towel!  Wow!  I was so happy to smell them!

Now I love being snuggly in my new bed!

“What a sweet boy!”  my new Mom said, so I smiled and told her I was “Sonny Boy”, not “Sweet Boy”, but I was O.K. if she wanted to call me “Sweetie”.  Dad had to drive the car, but I could see him smiling!

Mom thinks I'm a Sweetie!

So, that’s how it was a year ago, this very day, and so much has happened since then!  I used to be really scared of just about everything – even Oliver the cat, at first (well, he did swipe at me with his paw!) – but now we are best friends and I am much more relaxed.  For example, Mom sometimes reminds me how I used to jump up whenever she or Dad put a coffee cup on the table, but I don’t do that any more!

I love being in the Country with Mom & Dad!

I never used to play with any toys, but now I have all my own special toys and I love to play!  I have a wonderful, cozy bed, but I especially love to sleep in Mom’s lap!  I don’t really like it outside in the big city where we live, but I love it when Mom starts to get ready to go to the country!  I love it in the country!  I jump in the car and sleep peacefully all the way there!  The country is so full of squirrels and chipmunks – and I even met a horse there!

OK!  I’m ready to play!!

A while back I started to hurt when I walked and it turned out that I had Lyme disease, even though I take medicine to get rid of those darn ticks every month.  I had to take some more medicine for a while which I didn’t like, but it seems to have been worth it because my legs stopped hurting and my most recent blood test was really good!  My appetite is still fine, have no fear!  None of my troubles have reduced the gusto I display when it comes to meal time!

I Love my toys now!
…Especially my Froggie!
Mom and Dad have done so much for me all year, making me feel safe and loved, teaching me to be silly and playful, and taking lots of time to have trainers work with me and help me get over my fears.  My ears and my tail are up and happy so much of the time now, and I know I have Mom and Dad to thank for that!   I am so very happy that they were the ones who were waiting for me that day when I came off the plane!

My Mom says she has always loved it when August days turn into September, but now she loves that time of year even more because last August turned into "Sonny Boy's Here!" on September 1st – and that’s even better!

Zeke is now a Therapy Dog!

Contributed by Zeke fka CP Mystique

Zeke is now a Graduate Therapy Dog!

Hello Col. Potter fans!

Zeke here, down along the beautiful Jersey Shore!  Guess what?  I just passed my Pet Therapy dog test!  Mom said I did a really great job with all the children who pretended to be a crowd, with noisy movement and all that.  It was all part of the test.

Mom also said that now she and I will either be going to nursing facilities, hospitals, or schools - including special needs schools – and maybe some “Reading to Dogs” programs.  I can’t wait!

Mom and Dad are very proud of me and very happy that I was rescued by the wonderful Volunteers at Colonel Potter Cairn Rescue Network!

Especially Foster Mom, Marie!

Kaper (CP’s KPax) Turns Eight!

Contributed by his & Ginger’s (fka CP Spangle) Mom

Ginger, fka CP Spangle, and Kaper, fka CP KPax

I want to thank Col. Potter for rescuing Kaper (fka CP KPax), who just turned eight years old on August 18, 2013.  He was saved by CP two and a half years ago after spending the first five years of his life as a puppy mill breeder dog.  He is a special little gentleman who loves curling up with me and going on walks.

I also want to thank you all for Ginger (fka CP Spangle), who will soon celebrate her first gotcha day here!  She turned three in June and she is a sweet little girl with all the energy of a puppy.  She was a puppy mill breeder dog also, and was rescued by Col Potter at age two.  I am fortunate to be the Forever Mom for both these kids.  They are still wary of strangers, but are adjusting well.

I've attached a photo of Ginger and Kaper.  They look posed, but they often sit that way.  Here are two more perfect examples of why everything Col Potter does is so important.

Thanks from a grateful Forever Mom!
