Adonis: Even More Handsome One Year Later

I want to add my thanks to everyone who helped the Famous Lovers get to CP from the Ohio hoarder. I fostered and then adopted Adonis (my second adopted foster; Nettie was my first foster and first adopted).

Adonis had his check up and vaccinations last week (clean bill of health except for the luxating patellas). He is the most precious boy to me. He and Nettie get along great. He still has trust/touch issues but they are so much better now. When I get home from work he cries in delight and bounces and gives lots of kisses.

He's still working on his housetraining - he's quite the stubborn and independent boy cairn, so much like a girl cairn, LOL. He is no lapdog, but will play attack my toes under the throw. He's not allowed on the couch, but sneaks up there occasionally when Nettie is down. He's a very smart little boy and I love him dearly. Thank you everyone for helping to save him.

Celebrating Two Gotcha Days in Massachusetts!

We are happy to be celebrating 2 Gotcha Days at my house! 

We adopted Mia FKA Roselle from CP in 2009. She was only 7 months old & one of the last of the Windy City Kids to be rescued. When I caught sight of her in a crate in Mo Kesler's van, it was love at first sight! She is a beautiful "dish rag" cairn (Aunt Mary Noll says) with shades of red and wheaton with a dark snout. Her favorite thing to do is chase & eat (yuck) birds, chew on nylabones & drive the old cairns crazy!! Thank you CP for rescuing her & introducing me to the greatest group around!!

 
Last year we adopted 15 year old BZ from a patient of mine who was going through a divorce & couldn't take her to the apartment she rented. When she asked about surrendering her to CP, I offered to take her instead. BZ is the smartest, sweetest, most alpha cairn I've ever met! I brought her to the vets yesterday for her checkup & no one can believe she's almost 16 yrs. old! She is in excellent health, except we are going to watch one of her molars which may need extraction (I am a dental hygienist, so I'll keep a close eye on it)

Davy Finds the Perfect Furever Home

Tess: From Famous Lover to Famously Loved

One year ago this month (2/13/11 to be exact), a batch of 14 Cairns came into Col. Potter – Named the "Famous Lovers" because of their Valentine’s Day arrival. Aphrodite, Paola, Adonis, Cyrano, Heloise, Echo, Francesca, Roxanne, Narcissus, Pierrot, Abelard, Pierette, Juliet, and Romeo.

They all grab you, but one of them stole our hearts, and as soon as we saw this photo, we applied to adopt her.


VERY PREGNANT Aphrodite - At the shelter in OH where all 124+ dogs were taken after being seized from a hoarder. We say + because several of them, were pregnant, one giving birth at the shelter that very day!


Aphrodite waited until she was safe and warm in CP’s loving arms to bring her six puppies into the world, lovingly fostered in Missouri by Stacey and Alice Wagers. Her pups were named Yertle the Turtle, Lori the Lorax, Star Bellied Sneetch, Mulberry, Marvin K. Mooney and Horton, all after Dr. Suess characters.


Aphrodite, NOW TESS - at home in BuddyWorld at Calliope – she is our little “Princess Angel”.
We GAVE her our beloved Miri’s (fka CP’s Lena ) birthday (February 10) and estimate her to be 2 years old. Miri crossed the Rainbow Bridge November 22, 2010 and we believe sent us Tess to fill that hole in our hearts.


SO - A happy second birthday and first gotchya day to you Miss Tess Ami at Calliope.

Snow-loving Scout

Above is a really short video link of Scout in her Christmas present. I've never used sweaters before, but the wind off our little lake can be quite cold in the winter and with her hair still so short I figured it wouldn't hurt. People stop all the time and comment on how cute she is. We haven't had to use it a lot because our winter has been pretty warm.


The one big snow fall this year gave us about 6 in. and only lasted a few days. Scout loved it! She dashed in and out the dog door and all around the yard. I try to get her out every day for a walk down to the lake. It's about 20 min. there and back. She is still afraid of big trucks, tree work, any thing loud. I just keep taking her out and eventually it will all seem normal to her. 


In the house she's getting to be quite the little Cairn. If I pet Max, she jumps all over me, even biting my hands to get me to pet her. She flops on her back, pawing the air. It's the cutest thing. She's like a little stuffed animal come to life. 


A few weeks ago she caught one of the shrews that live in the ivy along the fence. She checks every day for them. And if a squirrel dares to come in the yard, she is off like a shot! The other day, when I pulled into the garage, I could hear her barking in the house. She never makes a sound, so I was happy to hear her protecting her home.


She is such a joy, we feel very lucky to have found her. I hope that your winter goes by quickly and that Jacket and Toggle make steady progress and turn out as well as Scout did.

Sarut - One Wonderful Year Later

Well last week was Sarut's 1st anniversary with us. Since the very first night of arrival she has remained the perfect little angel. I will NEVER forget that day, pacing about anxiously waiting for the time to pass until it was finally time to leave for the airport. Still, we arrived there way too early. Daddy couldn't even work all day to make the time go more quickly and had to come home early. I can't believe it has been a year already! On the other hand, Sarut behaves as though she has been in our family since the beginning. She is doing so well and is the happiest little girl all the time! She's truly the most well-behave furkid and just so affectionate...we love her to pieces STILL!!!!!! Thank-you all so much for this most priceless jewel.

Gruffyn Tales

Foster Mom Bonnie sent to great update from Gruffyn's furever Mom:

Unfortunately no photos...I'm sure everyone remembers how much Gruffy hated to have his pictue taken while here. ;) But, wonderful news from Gruffy's new home with former mill girl Missy Tinker:

One might think Gruffy has lived with us his whole life. After investigating the entire house he settled down as if he owned the place. His favorite place to nap is a back cushion on the sofa, they are squishy down like pillows and he has worked it into a "well" that fits him perfectly.

Missy is acting like his mother! He was in his red jammies for the first time in a while and she had to check him out very carefully to make sure they fit him properly. Gruffy whines when he see the cat and Missy has to go comfort him. Head scritching and tummy rubs may start out with Gruffy on my lap and Missy beside us until Gruffy slides down on top of her. Neither one seems to mind.

Don't know how much weight Missy has lost, but she can now wear her pink polka dot parka: Gruffy feels a little heavier, his ribs and spine don't feel so prominent.

The most interesting thing about Gruffy is the change in his color. The dark gray/wheaten patch now covers most of his left flank and the fur up the middle of his back is turning gray. The fur is still fine and thin and I don't think he will ever get back a thick coat like Missy. Oh and I am amazed at how high he lifts his leg to pee. Soooo high he almost topples over.

He and Missy are getting very close. Right now they are sleeping side by side on the sofa.

He looks so jaunty when we go for a walk, with his head held high and his tail at attention. It's like he knows he is a spiffy dude. Eat your hearts out all you girl dog divas!

I (Foster Mom) asked if she might think about returning Gruffy as we miss him sooooo much and
here is her reply: Ummm, talk to me about returning Gruffy in about 30 years or so.

It makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time.

Happy Gotcha Day Jill!

This week, Jill celebrated her 7th gotcha day.
Mom Mary says:
She came to us as a very scared mill momma, but with a lot of love and patience, she has blossomed into a Cairn princess of sorts. She is still timid around people she doesn't know, and isn't very sociable with dogs she doesn't know. No trips to the dog park for her! She is my heart dog. She is now 13 years old and her hearing and sight are failing, but she still LOVES mealtime ( barks because mom isn't fast enough and does a little happy dance when her food is ready)!
She also loves taking a good nap, and snuggling with mom.

Even Trudy Lou - now Gertie - Has a New Year's Diet

Trudy Lou, now Gertie, really has settled in to her home in Idaho with her new Mom.


She has a "big" (or should we say "little") sister, Heidi.


Gertie will be workng on her girlie figure with added walks and fewer treats.


Gertie has a wonderful home, and we are hoping for updates to see how her New Year Resolution is coming.

Chester Shows off His Soccer Moves

Chester (his original name) has been a part of our family for over ten years. He was adopted via the Col Potter Cairn Rescue network, and as you can see from this YouTube link, he is enjoying being part of the Schneider family. You guys can certainly take pride in putting together a safe and happy environment for your one of your rescued Cairns.

Padraig Toto Lee Moore aka Mr. Handsome

Padraig came into Col. Potter as a sad little fellow who lost both his owners within several weeks of each other. I loved having him as a foster and he played well with my Kiara while Ruthie disdained him.  But Col. Potter kids don't stay sad for long because they always find the most perfect furever homes.  Padraig, now called Toto, lives in North Carolina and has a "Weemie" furbro as well as a Mom who loves him dearly. Just look at this recent photo - be still my heart!

Dear Lynn,
Catey wants us to say Thank You for the blue dog.
She hasn't put it down since she opened it, only to eat.
Catey has been a joyous addition to our house.
She has learned so much in the last two years.
We have taken her on several trips, to the mountains and sea.
Last year we traveled to the sea shore in Oregon and this
year it was to Colorado for a week with family.

Hello from Coco's family fka Mudslide

Furever Mom Kristis sent this great update to Mudslide's Foster Mom Chris:

Just wanted to give you an update on Coco with some pictures. We're getting ready to drive home to Kentucky next week. Coco and Peanut are both coming along for the long drive. She really enjoys going home with us. It gives her a chance to get even more attention than she already gets! She loves visiting her grandparents and her fur cousins. Lots of playtime during the holidays for her!

Coco starts basic obedience next month. We have already taught Coco "sit" on our own and it only took her less than a week to learn! I thought it would take longer since she can be a bit stubborn, but she learned very fast. She will even sit without a treat and when our friends tell her to sit. Good to know that we will not necessarily need to use treats to train Coco and that she will do tricks for a nice head rub. This is the complete opposite of Peanut who is VERY food driven. We always say that Coco eats to live while Peanut lives to eat.


We were going to try and train Coco on our own, but she is VERY stubborn when it comes to the command "come". She hears us when we tell her come, but she acts like she can't hear us and doesn't see us and continues to patrol the yard for geckos and frogs. She sees keeping the geckos and frogs away from the house as her job. If she sees one, there is no getting her attention back to you unless you walk over and pick her up. We have had to fish her out of the bushes many many times.

Other than the training issues Coco is doing great! We are sooo happy to have her and couldn't imagine life without her. She is such as sweet dog and has such a funny personality. She can bark/howl in all sorts of ranges. It's funny to hear the noises that come out of her mouth sometimes. We're not sure whether to call the noises she makes a bark or howl or groan. Very funny sounds! It makes us laugh.

My foster boy, Brooks left a little while ago with his new Mom! Just look at that smile on his face. He is going to be one happily spoiled little boy! He’ll be an only dog and Mom is retired, so he’ll get lots of lovins and undivided attention.
