Snow-loving Scout

Former Foster Dad says: Sister nka Scout spent almost nine years in a Mill so updates like this make my day.

Above is a really short video link of Scout in her Christmas present. I've never used sweaters before, but the wind off our little lake can be quite cold in the winter and with her hair still so short I figured it wouldn't hurt. People stop all the time and comment on how cute she is. We haven't had to use it a lot because our winter has been pretty warm.


The one big snow fall this year gave us about 6 in. and only lasted a few days. Scout loved it! She dashed in and out the dog door and all around the yard. I try to get her out every day for a walk down to the lake. It's about 20 min. there and back. She is still afraid of big trucks, tree work, any thing loud. I just keep taking her out and eventually it will all seem normal to her. 


In the house she's getting to be quite the little Cairn. If I pet Max, she jumps all over me, even biting my hands to get me to pet her. She flops on her back, pawing the air. It's the cutest thing. She's like a little stuffed animal come to life. 


A few weeks ago she caught one of the shrews that live in the ivy along the fence. She checks every day for them. And if a squirrel dares to come in the yard, she is off like a shot! The other day, when I pulled into the garage, I could hear her barking in the house. She never makes a sound, so I was happy to hear her protecting her home.


She is such a joy, we feel very lucky to have found her. I hope that your winter goes by quickly and that Jacket and Toggle make steady progress and turn out as well as Scout did.

Scout Turn 18!

We have cause to celebrate today.  Scout turns 18!!  Talk about Cairntude, this guy has it.  He's had Cushings over half of his life and has heart problems on top of that, he's lost most of his eyesight and hearing, but his nose works great and he still loves his food.  


We carry him up and down the steps as he can't see to navigate them (he took a tumble down an entire flight one day; scared me to death!)  He still loves to go for car rides and roam around the yard with the breeze blowing thru his hair.  With winter a few months away, hopefully he'll be able to play in the snow once again and make snow angels.  My husband has had Scout since he was a puppy (I'm sure he's a mill dog) and fell in love with the breed as have I when we got together.

Besides Scout, we have Cali, 6, Cubbie, 10, and Wrigley, 3. Cubbie and Wrigley were fosters of mine that showed up on our doorstep and never left. So, here's a toast to Mr. Scoutie -- hopefully you'll be with us to see your 19th! I've attached a photo of the herd and Bill all piled on his chair. Scout is the wheaton on the left, Wrigley is the redhead, Cali has her head on Bill's leg and Cubbie Bear is in Bill's left arm. Our kids. How dull our lives would be without them!!

Sister - now Scout - has a Brother!

Furever home to Foster Dad:

Ron, She's here! and is the sweetest thing! We're calling her Scout. She was a little nervous at first, but is getting over it pretty well.

Potty in the run, meeting Max, checking out the house - all went well. She has already learned how to go out the dog door. Coming back in is a little harder, but this is just day 1. We are so happy and in love. Thank-you for all you've done.

For Keltie He's All in the Family

Foster Mom Penny A sent us this happy ever after story:

My foster Keltie went to his forever home in the Bay Area yesterday afternoon. He will have an older Cairn sister, Annie and a 7 year old Cairn brother, Scout (CP’s Franz) as well as his mom and dad. All reports are that he had a great flight in his Sherpa and made a great impression on everyone at the airport when his dad let him out to stretch his legs. Keltie was a great little foster dog and I will miss the little trouble-maker (VBG), but I don’t think my resident furbutts feel quite the same.

I would like to thank everyone in Col. Potter who made this adoption possible and give a big shout out to our Matchmakers who are THE BEST. All of my fosters have gone to absolutely perfect homes. It makes it so much easier to let them go when you know that they will be much-loved family members and have great lives.

Attached is a picture of Keltie with new dad James, ready to start his new life as a California dog!

Cutie Patootie Molly Wahoo

Ladies and gentlemen,  Miss Molly Wahoo.....

Until recently we were a one Cairn family.  Scout was the little guy who was getting all the attention and was loving it. We saw Molly (Wahoo) in January and put in an application for her.  We knew she had heart worms and were willing to wait for her to get her clean bill of health.  For two months we thought her name was Wahoo, two days before we picked her up we found out her name was Molly.  So, Molly Wahoo came to live with us.  Being new to each other I wasn't sure what to expect.   She rode quietly in the car and was good in the hotel also.

When we got home, Scout came out to the street to meet us.  After some sniffing all seemed well.  Once inside, Molly settled in real nice.  She had her toy and didn't bother with Scout's.   She also found her place to hang out and she has a new memory foam bed where she sleeps with her Col. Potter blanket (even I don't have one of those).  She is a daddy's dog, everywhere I go, she is right there and don't even think the word outside.  She runs to the door and wants to almost run everywhere.  She is quick to finish her business and the wants to keep moving.

Molly and Scout don't mind sharing the attention.  They both get plenty.  They don't play together but they don't fight either.  Maybe that's because they are both teenagers (you know how they are).

She is the missing piece to our furmamily.  She learned the routine quickly and has the run of the house with Scout.  She hasn't had any accidents or tore anything up.  She is perfect.

In closing, I would love to thank the Col. Potter Rescue group for all their hard work and especially the foster mom Marie who without her love and devotion this fine young lady might not be with us today.  Becky who came to make sure our home was Cairn ready, Rebecca who checked our references,  Joanne, Director of Placement Services,  Beverly, who pushed the application so we could get her the day we did and Sandy, Post Adoption Coordinator. Without you and all the wonderful people in the network these little bundles of joy may not have the happy homes they have now.

A Yogurt a Day Keeps Annie Happy and Healthy

I have been meaning to send this photo in for a while. This is our 18-year old (yes, 18!) Cairn girl, Annie. Her nightly ritual is diving (literally) into the yogurt cup after we have our yogurt. She gets it stuck on her nose every time (we never give the yogurt cup to her unsupervised because we would not want it there on her nose for too long!). Next to her in the photo is Scout, our CP kid (aka Franz).  He has no trouble getting the yogurt out as you can see by the clean cup on the carpet.  We adopted Scout two years ago from CP.

Fursibs Sugar fka Abs and Scout

I got a great little update from Linda in GA who adopted CP Abs nka Sugar. She had to shave her little boy Scout and I guess Sugar got a big kick out of it. Have you ever seen such a big smile on a dog?

Scout is still very handsome!!
