Snow-loving Scout

Above is a really short video link of Scout in her Christmas present. I've never used sweaters before, but the wind off our little lake can be quite cold in the winter and with her hair still so short I figured it wouldn't hurt. People stop all the time and comment on how cute she is. We haven't had to use it a lot because our winter has been pretty warm.

The one big snow fall this year gave us about 6 in. and only lasted a few days. Scout loved it! She dashed in and out the dog door and all around the yard. I try to get her out every day for a walk down to the lake. It's about 20 min. there and back. She is still afraid of big trucks, tree work, any thing loud. I just keep taking her out and eventually it will all seem normal to her.

In the house she's getting to be quite the little Cairn. If I pet Max, she jumps all over me, even biting my hands to get me to pet her. She flops on her back, pawing the air. It's the cutest thing. She's like a little stuffed animal come to life.

A few weeks ago she caught one of the shrews that live in the ivy along the fence. She checks every day for them. And if a squirrel dares to come in the yard, she is off like a shot! The other day, when I pulled into the garage, I could hear her barking in the house. She never makes a sound, so I was happy to hear her protecting her home.

She is such a joy, we feel very lucky to have found her. I hope that your winter goes by quickly and that Jacket and Toggle make steady progress and turn out as well as Scout did.

Sarut - One Wonderful Year Later

Well last week was Sarut's 1st anniversary with us. Since the very first night of arrival she has remained the perfect little angel. I will NEVER forget that day, pacing about anxiously waiting for the time to pass until it was finally time to leave for the airport. Still, we arrived there way too early. Daddy couldn't even work all day to make the time go more quickly and had to come home early. I can't believe it has been a year already! On the other hand, Sarut behaves as though she has been in our family since the beginning. She is doing so well and is the happiest little girl all the time! She's truly the most well-behave furkid and just so affectionate...we love her to pieces STILL!!!!!! Thank-you all so much for this most priceless jewel.

Gruffyn Tales

Foster Mom Bonnie sent to great update from Gruffyn's furever Mom:

Unfortunately no photos...I'm sure everyone remembers how much Gruffy hated to have his pictue taken while here. ;) But, wonderful news from Gruffy's new home with former mill girl Missy Tinker:

One might think Gruffy has lived with us his whole life. After investigating the entire house he settled down as if he owned the place. His favorite place to nap is a back cushion on the sofa, they are squishy down like pillows and he has worked it into a "well" that fits him perfectly.

Missy is acting like his mother! He was in his red jammies for the first time in a while and she had to check him out very carefully to make sure they fit him properly. Gruffy whines when he see the cat and Missy has to go comfort him. Head scritching and tummy rubs may start out with Gruffy on my lap and Missy beside us until Gruffy slides down on top of her. Neither one seems to mind.

Don't know how much weight Missy has lost, but she can now wear her pink polka dot parka: Gruffy feels a little heavier, his ribs and spine don't feel so prominent.

The most interesting thing about Gruffy is the change in his color. The dark gray/wheaten patch now covers most of his left flank and the fur up the middle of his back is turning gray. The fur is still fine and thin and I don't think he will ever get back a thick coat like Missy. Oh and I am amazed at how high he lifts his leg to pee. Soooo high he almost topples over.

He and Missy are getting very close. Right now they are sleeping side by side on the sofa.

He looks so jaunty when we go for a walk, with his head held high and his tail at attention. It's like he knows he is a spiffy dude. Eat your hearts out all you girl dog divas!

I (Foster Mom) asked if she might think about returning Gruffy as we miss him sooooo much and
here is her reply: Ummm, talk to me about returning Gruffy in about 30 years or so.

It makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time.

She came to us as a very scared mill momma, but with a lot of love and patience, she has blossomed into a Cairn princess of sorts. She is still timid around people she doesn't know, and isn't very sociable with dogs she doesn't know. No trips to the dog park for her! She is my heart dog. She is now 13 years old and her hearing and sight are failing, but she still LOVES mealtime ( barks because mom isn't fast enough and does a little happy dance when her food is ready)!
She also loves taking a good nap, and snuggling with mom.

Padraig came into Col. Potter as a sad little fellow who lost both his owners within several weeks of each other. I loved having him as a foster and he played well with my Kiara while Ruthie disdained him. But Col. Potter kids don't stay sad for long because they always find the most perfect furever homes. Just wanted to give you an update on Coco with some pictures. We're getting ready to drive home to Kentucky next week. Coco and Peanut are both coming along for the long drive. She really enjoys going home with us. It gives her a chance to get even more attention than she already gets! She loves visiting her grandparents and her fur cousins. Lots of playtime during the holidays for her!

Coco starts basic obedience next month. We have already taught Coco "sit" on our own and it only took her less than a week to learn! I thought it would take longer since she can be a bit stubborn, but she learned very fast. She will even sit without a treat and when our friends tell her to sit. Good to know that we will not necessarily need to use treats to train Coco and that she will do tricks for a nice head rub. This is the complete opposite of Peanut who is VERY food driven. We always say that Coco eats to live while Peanut lives to eat.

We were going to try and train Coco on our own, but she is VERY stubborn when it comes to the command "come". She hears us when we tell her come, but she acts like she can't hear us and doesn't see us and continues to patrol the yard for geckos and frogs. She sees keeping the geckos and frogs away from the house as her job. If she sees one, there is no getting her attention back to you unless you walk over and pick her up. We have had to fish her out of the bushes many many times.

Other than the training issues Coco is doing great! We are sooo happy to have her and couldn't imagine life without her. She is such as sweet dog and has such a funny personality. She can bark/howl in all sorts of ranges. It's funny to hear the noises that come out of her mouth sometimes. We're not sure whether to call the noises she makes a bark or howl or groan. Very funny sounds! It makes us laugh.

A Turkey Day Poem

T’was the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees....

I arrived in my forever home on the 13th of November last year.
Tomorrow will be my second Thanksgiving here. Last year I sent CP a message telling them how grateful I was to have been rescued, fostered, and put in such a loving forever home. I thought life couldn't be better. Then in April, my mom and dad adopted Gem. Life with my sister has been wonderful. This year I am especially grateful to have Gem in my life and for all the good care I receive from my human family. I am
also eagerly awaiting a taste of that delicious turkey. Won't Gem be surprised!

Mary - Cairn Sweetness and So Much More!

Today, my adopted Cairn Mary turned 12 years old! In the fall of 2005, she was liberated and the wonderful people at Colonel Potter gave her the care she needed (and the name Mary, which I didn't change) until she found her forever home with me and her sometimes-grouchy Cairn sister, Ginger, on November 6, 2005. She was fostered in Wisconsin and adopted when I lived in Chicago, and now we all live in Dallas, where the winters are much kinder to little dog paws.

I thought today was a good day to give you this update and thank you for the opportunity to have such a wonderful little Cairn be a part of my life for the past six years. She just had a check-up at the vet two weeks ago, and is still going strong, albeit a tiny little bit slower. A clean bill of health, and a sweet disposition to boot - what more could a proud Cairn parent ask?

I am attaching a picture, just in case you would like to have another happy ending to add to your lovely list of successes.

Thank you again for allowing me the chance to have Mary be a part of my life.

Arkie Fox Sends an Amusing Update

Hi mom. Thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a great birthday even though Dad was out of town. I got a birthday muffin and a new toy. And yes I'm sharing my toy with Merlin and Lady G.

Later that week I snuck up and got Mom's new earmuffs. Merlin was chasing me, Lady G was chasing Merlin and Mom was chasing all three of us. It was a blast.

This morning I had to drive off those pesky deer again. A backyard warrior's work is never done.

Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving. It's my second one here and Mom & Dad are going to celebrate with just us this year. Mom's soooo excited. They're not traveling and it's her first time to make Thanksgiving Dinner all by her self.

Well gotta go and make sure those pesky deer haven't come back.

Kerry - and FurSis Kyna - Stop to Smell the Flowers of Furever!

Kerry is slowly intergrating herself into her new home. She is so funny because she will seek me out, but then when I look at her and give her a big HI, she goes running. But the kisses keep coming. When I lie on the couch, she even kisses my toes!

She is becoming more and more brave each day...by that I mean, exploring her new home. She has three "safe" places, the couch, the corner of the office, and her bed. However, my Cairn, Kyna, learned how to break out of that thing years ago, and the first day that I left them alone, Kyna free, and Kerry in the "bed"...we actually call it the "pup tent..." I arrived home and Kerry was out and sitting on our bed and Kyna was on her bench. Both of them looking like...what? we didn't do anything. Very, very funny! And a couple of times we've both gotten up in the morning and left the dogs in the bedroom and Kyna will be sitting by the pup tent waiting for Kerry to come out!!!

She has almost mastered going up and down the stairs...all 14 of them, and she does really well with it. Last night she was a hoot. For some reason when I sat on the couch, she got really feisty and we started "wrestling." We were laughing so hard at her!! Just about every morning we sit down on the floor with both of them and have fun "wrestling." And she is even responding to her new name. I say Kerry, and she looks at me with those big brown eyes...heart melting!!!

Kerry is an absolute joy, and more and more of her personality shines each day. I'm thankful for Colonel Potter and this lovely addition to our family. And thankful for all of you that made it possible.

A Tale of Two Doggies...or Four

A quick update to those of you who know that the Krebs Kennel has gotten delightfully out of hand.

My first-ever foster, Cyrano of the Famous Lovers, was an absolute doll. As I told my mentor, if he had been my third or fourth foster, I might have known not to ever let him go. But I was new and idealistic and I did...however his adoptive home did not work out. Happily Col. Potter allowed me to bring him back to Kansas and he is now Mulligan, my "do-over" dog.

It quickly became clear that, at age 3, Mulligan has far more energy and orneriness than my 11-year old pair -- Bogey (CPs Brigand) and Pearl (a rescue Westie). I set out to find a pal for the new boy and Col. Potter graciously allowed me to adopt "Amazing Grace" or Gracie!

Little 3-year old Gracie has had quite a lot of turmoil in her life and was a bit spooked when we shuffled her again. But she has bonded like glue to Mulligan and has special relationships with each of the oldsters. It's all helping her to sublimate her timidity and enhance her assertiveness!

So now we're headed into the winter months with a houseful of furry friends. We couldn't be happier -- THANK YOU, Col. Potter!!!

This will be quick 'cuz Mom helped me write a long note and we lost it when we tried to add some pictures.
Had a good day, up early when Mom went to check on Sami, but she is sick so didn't go to school. So...we got to go outside and eat early and then go back to sleep for awhile. I've been good with my potty stops, no accidents in the house or crate and if asked to go out I run right to the back door, and I've gone to the door a couple of times myself. I even went through the doggy door a couple of times. Mom gave Abby and me brand new Kongs with kibble and peanut butter in them. Of course, I had mine in a crate, because I've been told that Abby is the boss and will steal stuff from me. Mine was great and I think Abby's was too.

So, besides the fact that Mom says she didn't get anything done today because of watching us and reading on the computer, it was a good day. Sami's playing with us now. She just had us in a tug-a-war with socks tied together, but Abby's smarter than me and won, getting a little to close for Mom's comfort so that was the end of the game for tonite.

Gotta go, all of my human family is sniffing and coughing and need some rest. Check out the great pictures that Mom got of us today. Abby's the biggin' and I'm the little guy.

Kesy's Gotcha Day - PM to Princess!

Today is Kasey's Gotcha Day - one year ago John and I drove to New Jersey and picked her up from Denise and Andre. I can't believe it's been a year already!

Kasey was originally known as Backpack (from the Back to School Intakes Group) and was a puppy mill mom. Because of her background, she had some issues that we needed to overcome. For the first few months she was here, we had to carry her in and out of doors. She didn't really like walking very far and was hesitant when greeting other dogs. She also had some issues with men and, at times, I felt badly for John, who spoiled her even more than I did :)

Last week John and I went away and couldn't take Kasey with us on this trip. So we had to use the DREADED KENNEL. Though I don't want to do that too often, I think she really benefited from her stay. Since she's been home, she seems a little more lively than before. The other
day John opened the front door, and she tore out to greet our neighbors' dogs, Sierra and Nevada - she never would have done that before (although that can also be a bad thing :)

She loves to take two or three-mile walks now. The biggest change was the other day when I wasn't home - she went down to the basement where John has his office and laid on the sofa while he worked at his desk. That really made his day! Right now she's standing at the top of the basement stairs "talking" to John because he's not moving fast enough - I keep telling him not to say the word "ride" until we're ready to go out the door.

As I mentioned before, while we were recently visiting our daughter, Kasey got swatted on the head when she tried to play with Pete, their very large cat. Their resident chihuahua also is not a "player" - so Harriet and her CP adoptee, Zoe, came to visit one day. It was great meeting
them, but Zoe was not inclined to play either. We're planning on trying that again. I've attached a photo of Kasey and Zoe and also one of Kasey sitting in her favorite chair (we love how she props herself up on the arm of the chair :)

Since we adopted Kasey, we've helped out with a few transports. I'd like to encourage everyone to do that - it's so much fun transporting the dogs and seeing the different personalities. And it's also great meeting other people involved in CP.

Adopting a dog from Col Potter is quite an amazing process and I just want to say thank you again for all you do.

CP Kids MeetUp: Dobri and Rommel now Furever Fursibs

Rommel's new family stayed up late last night just to send this to us. Here's Rommel meeting his sister for the first time. They did this in the park (on neutral ground) and it looks like it was a good time.

Can't you just hear Dobri (CP's Pencil) saying: "Wow, look what Mom and Dad got me! Thanks, Mom!! Thanks, Dad!"

Marie mentioned that it looks like Rommel will be Daddy's boy, and since Dobri is Momma's girl, Dad would be elated to have a Daddy's boy. Dobri is a little shy and Momma's girl, Rommel is bold and Daddy's boy. Perfect!

I just heard from Chain's new family. He met their resident girl and they at first sort of ignored each other, but has now had one play session which went well. Chain has been a good boy and pottied outside (as opposed to inside). He is very curious about his new home and yard, and is learning new limits and house rules. They are really looking forward to bonding this weekend and taking lots of pictures. I really like this family.

For Adonis Foster is Furever!

Adonis, of the Famous Lovers group, has gotten a mom that loves him for who he is, who loves him regardless of his issues. That would be me!

Adonis didn't want to be touched when he got here and I've had to learn to not do that, to learn to respect his boundaries. There have been a few nips and a completely apologetic Adonis, but most people just wouldn't understand him or love him as I do. As with Nettie, who was a resource guarder, she would go on attack when she saw any other dog and I was touching her, and I love her dearly. Now she rarely has these tendencies, tho they do occur on occasion and without warning.

Adonis does well with the resident dogs, looks out for Nettie, and plays a little with my boy, Kenzie. I have loved this boy from day one, he's so handsome and just too smart for his own good. We will continue to work with his issues. He's such an important part of my life and I'm so thankful CP rescued him this year from the Ohio hoarder in February (they had 200 dogs stacked in crates inside the home).

Adonis is about 5.5 years old, but is such a independent thinker (like the girls) and almost like a grouchy old man. Vet exams/tests have shown no reason for his touchiness. He's had marvelous breakthroughs at my home and will continue to get better.

I so thrilled to be approved to adopt a second foster....didn't take as long to be approved as the first one in 2002, lol. There are some fosters you just don't want to live without and now I've got two of them. I would never have met them if it hadn't been for CP coming to the rescue of these precious babies. Please remember to play NLOL and donate what you can, either funds or be a foster home or a volunteer on another team. Without all of you, there would be so few cairns enjoying the good life they deserve.

Bradshaw is a Real Lovey!

I adopted the sweetest boy from CP recently! His name was Bradshaw, but we have gone back to his previous name, Lovey. It so fits him because he is such a LOVE! He is housebroken, gets along with everyone, won't get on furniture or our bed unless invited (wish my cairns were as well behaved!) & never barks in the house!

His favorite activities are bird watching (hopefully not catching), playing with toys & long walks with his Mom. This guy is as close to perfect as a cairn can be! He does have some skin issues, but my vet has prescribed meds that are working well & he is on grain-free food.

My 3 year old CP girl Mia is so happy to have a buddy to play with & my old cairns are happy that she is leaving them alone! We took a trip to the beach last Sunday. How Angus (and Mary) Saved a Human

I am Mom to 2 Cairn Terriers, Macy and Angus. I've had my rescue, Macy, for almost 4 years. While at the dog park one day, I met Mary S, a foster mom for Col. Potter.

I had never heard of your organization and we talked for quite a while. She has since been a wonderful friend and Cairn mentor to me.

I have viewed the CP website pretty much every day since because I love to see 'adoption pending' and 'adopted' next to these sweet babies. And I've made a few donations along the way. I saw Angus listed as a cross posting for the Houston SPCA and fell in love with his picture. I was so afraid something bad would happen to him in a shelter and emailed Mary as fast as I could. She checked and said that CP was standing by if they needed to take him. I couldn't get him out of my mind. I thought about him and felt anxious because he was at a shelter. I even dreamed about him. I first saw him on the website on a Tuesday, went to see him twice on Wednesday and adopted him on Friday. Mary was so sweet and met me at the SPCA when I adopted Angus. I think CP foster moms must be the best!! I know Mary is for sure!

My wheaten Cairn, Macy, is still adapting to her new brother, but I see progress every day. She and Angus are night and day in looks and personality....except they both LOVE people.

I just wanted to thank Col. Potter for cross posting with shelters. If not, I would not have the sweetest little guy in the world.

We adopted Bea and Neha together 3 years ago as they had bonded in foster care and when we decided to adopt Zander 2 years ago we had the contract dated for 9/24 so they could share the date!

Scout Turn 18!

We have cause to celebrate today. Scout turns 18!! Talk about Cairntude, this guy has it. He's had Cushings over half of his life and has heart problems on top of that, he's lost most of his eyesight and hearing, but his nose works great and he still loves his food.

We carry him up and down the steps as he can't see to navigate them (he took a tumble down an entire flight one day; scared me to death!) He still loves to go for car rides and roam around the yard with the breeze blowing thru his hair. With winter a few months away, hopefully he'll be able to play in the snow once again and make snow angels. My husband has had Scout since he was a puppy (I'm sure he's a mill dog) and fell in love with the breed as have I when we got together.

Besides Scout, we have Cali, 6, Cubbie, 10, and Wrigley, 3. Cubbie and Wrigley were fosters of mine that showed up on our doorstep and never left. So, here's a toast to Mr. Scoutie -- hopefully you'll be with us to see your 19th! I've attached a photo of the herd and Bill all piled on his chair. Scout is the wheaton on the left, Wrigley is the redhead, Cali has her head on Bill's leg and Cubbie Bear is in Bill's left arm. Our kids. How dull our lives would be without them!!

Teagan Has a New Home

This is so great, I did the HSI for Jan and David and they are wonderful folks and are already totally in love with this girl.

The back of the couch is every cairn's favorite resting spot!

Jan was so funny when she called to tell me they were home. She said that Teagan was accustomed to getting a treat after going out and Jan not completely aware after only adopting her a few hrs before "forgot" this important deed. It seems that Miss Teagan went to her bag of important things foster mom Deb had sent along with her and removed the box of treats and brought them to her new mom and dropped them at her feet and looked at her as if to say, you need to get with the program! lol...Jan said she promptly gave Teagan the treat and then told her husband that not only do they have a car that is smarter than them, a phone that is smarter than them, they now have a cairn that is smarter than them too! I got a big chuckle out of that one cause it is soooo true...these kids are incredible!

Rothko goes HOME!!!

It actually happened last weekend, but read on and click HERE for more photos.

This afternoon my sweet, shy foster Rothko met his forever Mom & Dad. They drove 3 hours to get this shy boy at my house to help Rothko be comfortable. Well, it was love at first sight for all three of them! Rothko now Roscoe greeted all with open paws. His mom gave him a new toy which he destroyed with delight in no time at all. His foster sister Gabby joined in the carnage adding to everyone's entertainment. The cairns played while we all laughed at their antics. Roscoe's new mom said "He's more than I expected. He makes my heart sing!".....music to my ears!

Roscoe has a new brother Reggie, a schnoodle, who has been depressed since the death of his cairn brother. Roscoe & Reggie would have none of the planned slow introduction and are best buddies. I've had two updates already!! Roscoe has a new nickname - "Roscoe the rascal"!! The little guy emptied the toy boxes and has run laps through the house. Apparently he forgot he was shy! His new parents had been following Rothko/Roscoe on the website for some time and picked him out as the boy they wanted to be part of their family. How lucky all of them are!!

I'll miss you Rothko-Roscoe and all your hugs. You now have a family all cairns dream of! Happy forever my sweet boy!!

Foster Frannie Finds Furever!

This lovely little girl has an amazing new home.

Frannie will live an hours drive away from us, with her Mom and Dad, and Cairn sister.

New Mom's friends threw a "Frannie" shower and I'm very certain she is going to enjoy becoming a Cairn Princess!

New Dad asked me how Frannie would address future correspondence to me.. I replied "foster Mom" would work.

This reminds me of why I foster.. so many amazing homes out there, waiting for a Cairn to cherish.

The Cairns have a chance because of CP and all the incredible volunteers behind the scenes.

Here's Zoe - Playful, Smart and a Fashionista!

Our beautiful Zoe, the former PM Momma known as "Goldenrod", has been home with us for one month and we are so in love with her it brings happy tears!! She is an amazing and wonderful little girl...happy, affectionate, playful and smart....so brave about trying most new things. She is filled to the brim with Cairnitude, tho usually listens when told "No" if trying things like my camera or shoes for chewability and taste.

She has been increasingly brave about exploring the house....has climbed the stairs several times, tho still prefers to be carried....well, she is a Cairn Princess, after all!

Has navigated the yard in ever expanding paths instead of staying close to the front door, as she did in the beginning. Has met several neighbors and their dogs with some reserve, but much curiosity and tolerance.

Zoe's play repertoire has also grown. Her Dad taught her the joys of tug-of-war using a stuffed long-tailed skunk. Sadly, the skunk lost and is awaiting medical attention and stitches from Mom. But Mom's are nothing if not resourceful, so a new tug-of-war toy was fashioned from a tube sock and a chew ring...now Zoe's favorite. She recently started playing ball, tho it's never certain if she will bring it back or just pounce on it and try to chew it...either way, it's fun for all....you can actually see her great big grin!

Like all Cairns, she loves to chew....sometimes that included Mom if we were playing too hard. She now has many chew toys as alternatives, including a nubby bumpy ball she favors most. I also looked for another form of entertainment and, voila!...the little red rubbery treat gripper was discovered! Zoe worked that little toy every which way...including tossing it around to try to get the residual treat bits to fall out...well, i did tell you she was smart.

Zoe has a lovely little wardrobe since we are continuously dealing with little skin bumps and occasional scratching. The Vet says the bumps are hives probably caused by grass allergy, which Zoe loved rolling in til this news. I apply hydrocortisone cream to any bumps and dress her in something that covers her front legs/chest, where the problem areas are most prevalent. She is also wiped down with unscented baby wipes every time she returns from the yard/grass, as well as eating a limited ingredient diet.

We want to again thank everyone at CP for bringing us our Zoe....she has truly brightened our lives and brought great joy back to our home. Next on the agenda is a Cairn sibling to play with Zoe...and us!

Celebrating Harvard's Most Excellent Life

Though much too short, Harvard, or just "Harv", had a wonderful life as a CP Kid!

Harvard was born January 2, 2005 and spent his first 17 months in a puppymill. He came to Valerie as a foster. Harvard could not handle crating at all, I remember Valerie loosing a lot of sleep the first few nights due to Harv's letting her know how unhappy he was in his crate!

Some of us had the pleasure of meeting Harvard just recently at WI POOP. He was a very sweet, happy boy, one that you couldn't help but be drawn to; a handsome black brindle, more black than brindle.

He had many, many interests on him while in foster care. The first four matches all would have required him to be flown in a crate. Knowing he could not handle this, they were not approved. When the fifth match came, Valerie told John, Harvard's Dad, and John replied "I'll have to kill them". Valerie asked who he was talking about, and he replied "Anyone who tries to take Harvard". So the decision was made that Valerie and John could not let Harvard leave, and he was made a permanent forever furkid. Harvard could not have had a more perfect match!! He found his bit of heaven in the WI Dells.

Harvard made his way to the rainbow bridge after bravely fighting a short battle with pancreatitis.
Harvard is gone far too soon, far too quickly, and leaves a huge hole in Valerie's heart. Valerie adores her boy. Please hold Valerie and Harvard in your hearts while they take this journey. Please light a candle for Harv so he can find his way to the Rainbow Bridge, and in honor of his short life. Please always remember him, and the joy he brought to Valerie and John, and all who met him. He will be deeply missed.

Some of you who were at the NY CRAP will remember meeting Maisie, Sheryl, and her mom. Maisie was originally featured on the blog "From a Pauper to a Princess". Click the link to read her story.

Click the Video that Lynda G put together. I cry every time I watch this. She was the most terrified mill foster I had, and I laid in an expen with her in our backyard for hours, just trying to get her used to my closeness and touch.

She was here for over 9 months and required a VERY special home. Sheryl had been following my foster reports for 3 months on the available Cairns page, before she applied to adopt her. It was just meant to be and Sheryl has continued to work miracles with Maisie. I am absolutely thrilled with how much Maise has progressed.

Recently, Maisie visited this lakeside for a relaxing stroll and cooling dip. What a new wonderful life she has!

Sarut's New Dress

Ron, She's here! and is the sweetest thing! We're calling her Scout. She was a little nervous at first, but is getting over it pretty well.

Thank you Colonel Potter for bringing this wonderful little muffin into my life seven years ago! She is still everything I wanted and more! Having been a sad, scared, neglected mill momma for the first five years of her life, I am truly amazed at where she is now! She has taught me more about love, bravery, and loyalty than any human being I have known.

Thank you for giving her such a wonderful start to her new life, and for allowing me to be the forever mom to such a special little girl. My life is much richer today, because she is in it! She turned twelve years old just yesterday, and while I can see signs of her slowing down, and we are dealing with a lesion on her spinal cord that can not be cured, I am hopeful that we still have many happy days ahead of us. I am ecstatic to say that she has had more happy days outside of that mill now, than she had sad ones inside of it. Every day of freedom is a gift, and I can see how grateful she is mirrored in her beautiful eyes whenever she looks at me.

I love my little peanut more than words can express. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I've attached a picture of Midori - such a princess she has turned out to be!

Hello Aunt Mary,

It's Bella. Do you remember me. Of course you do. It has been two years since I came to my forever home and I am just loving it. They say it's a dogs life and they have no idea. It has been a busy summer for Mommy and Daddy. It seems that Daddy is at work a long time lately. We know because he's the one that usually lets us out and we have not been getting out as early. Mommy has even beat Daddy home a few times. He says it will get better in a while. I sure hope so because when he's not here I miss him something awful. DeDe is doing fine and so is Grandpa. Mommy and Daddy went on a trip this spring and Grandpa came and stayed with us. I like that a lot too because he spoils us.

Mommy and Daddy have decided they needed to lose some weight so they started walking and of course you know what that means. They make me walk too. I can go for a little bit but then when I decide that I've had enough, I just plant my little butt and someone has to carry me. Guess who carries me. I kind of do that on purpose because then I get to be in Daddy's arms. Aren't I a little princess?

Here is a photo of me in my little "Princess" nest. Daddy thinks that I am the sweetest. I hope that everything in your life is going great. Say Hi to all your little ones for me. If I am ever traveling through the area I will let you know and we can stop by and play for a bit. Same thing goes for you. Stop by anytime you are in the area.

We could not have asked for a better little girl. She continues to be the apple of my eye. She is just a delight to have around and has become the sister we wished for DeDe. It is so hard to believe that she came into our lives two years ago. Where does the time go? This little one deserved to have a good home from the start. The folks that gave her up first have no idea what they gave up but we are so happy to have her and we will continue to keep her healthy and spoil her in the manner she deserves.

Crockett was my second foster - Tubbs was the first. The "Miami Vice" as they were known. If I recall, they were both strays picked up near Miami. Tubbs was a handful and eventually went to a new foster mom, but he was a VERY good looking cairn.

Crockett - not so handsome. He had horrible skin and coat and required frequent Malesab baths for a serious yeast infection. But personality and sweetness planted him firmly in my heart. We had a great vet who worked with Bonnie B on the treatment. I introduced that vet to Wellness food which helped Crockett immensely. And after being diagnosed with low thyroid and starting medicated, Crockett's skin and health improved by leaps and bounds.

Eventually, an adoption interest emerged - an retired man and his wife in Ocala Fl, about 2 hours from me. So Crockett and I took a road trip to meet them. They had a little Shih-Tzu, Tanner (so named because he was neither "tan ner white". Crockett fell in love with Bob & Saundra as well as Tanner and the great back yard. Eventually, they adopted my guy and I visited several times until they moved to North Carolina.

Bob just sent me the most recent photo of Crockett, who must be about 10 yrs old now. He's more handsome than ever, thank to lots of loving from Bob & Saundra and his new half-pint fursib.

The tender- loving care Col. Potter gave Crockett on his road to health and happiness cannot be overlooked. It has been oft-repeated in other CP Kids, and is read daily in the posts we exchange about current fosters.

Just wanted to share another happy-ever-after about a cairn named Crockett Dary!

Buddy: Two Years Old; One Year Gotcha

Friday, August 12th: Today is Buddy's (CP Gouda) second birthday. Also next week will be our one year gotcha anniversary with him. We celebrated with a bone meatloaf with a side of carrots, green beans and broccoli. For dessert we dined on angel food cake with a little butter cream frosting.

Thanks to CP and the loving kindness of his foster family, Lori & Mike R, Buddy is enjoying his freedom to the fullest every day. He runs and play with fursib Christy Ann and gives all the squirrels a run for their money for as long as we will allow him to remain outside. He is such a joy to us and he makes us laugh every day. He is such a loving and happy little guy that it is hard to recall what our lives were without him. He is quite the vociferous little guy and lets us know daily how happy he is to be living a free life.

I just want to thank Col. Potter and all of you loving people for giving Buddy a chance at a happy life everafter.

Riley and Mollie Go on Vacation

Last week, Mollie and Riley had a vacation on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They had a house with lots of windows to survey the yard. When it wasn't too hot, they went kayaking, boating and played in the shade.

The house was on a creek and the bank was piled with rocks. Riley kept asking "if I'm a Cairn Terrier, why can't I play on those rocks?" She didn't know that mom was worried about snakes or whatever else she might find in there. Her "inner terrier" came out when she realized there were rabbits living under the shed. These rabbits didn't know what they were up against. They just kept coming out to eat grass without any regard for their safety! The man next door kept telling mom to let them off their leashes. Mom said "you don't understand,
these are Cairn Terriers!"

They made it the whole week without killing anything except a few bugs that Riley took care of for us. She is quite stubborn when you try to take her away from something she wants to do. She also ran back-up for Mollie when the neighbor dogs got to close. She went trotting off, tail wagging with her little "ruff ..........ruff" behind Mollie's "RUFF RUFF RUFF RUFF RUFF" It was great to see her coming out of her shell a little more. They even slept together on a chair, something Mom never thought she would see.

We never have them with us long enough ... so very true with the indomitable Katie Bubbles.

Thank Your Dog for Growling by Leah Roberts

Dobie's story

Dobie started growling at children while on walks. On a recommendation by his vet, his concerned owner brought him to see a trainer who followed traditional training methods. Here
she was taught to correct Dobie's growling by giving a short, quick yank on a choke collar and saying "No!" After a week or so of following this advice, she was very happy to see that
Dobie had stopped growling at children.

And then a while later, a child ran up to the dog while on a walk and reached out her hand to pet him. Because Dobie didn't growl, the child was not hesitant and the owner was not
concerned. Suddenly Dobie turned and bit the child's hand. His owner described this incident later as "It happened out of nowhere!"

Growling is a valuable warning signal

Did it really come out of nowhere? Not at all. Dobie's growling was a way of telling his owner, "I am afraid of these children who come by while we are on a walk." It was also his way of telling the children, "Please get away from me." For whatever reason, Dobie had begun to perceive children as a threat. Correcting his growling forced him to inhibit his warnings, but his feelings about children did not change. Therefore it was only a matter of time that some child would step over his fear threshhold, and without the warning growl Dobie's only way to cope was to escalate to a bite.

Correcting a growl, snarl, or even a lunge/snap is like putting a bandage on an infected wound. It will disguise the problem for a period of time, but not solve it - in fact, it will fester and get worse. Aggressive acts are simply reactions to a fearful stimulus. Like humans, when dogs become fearful they have the choice of fight or flight. Some dogs hide behind their owner's legs. Others act out in an aggressive manner.

When a warning display is inhibited and escape is not an option, the dog (or human) who feels helpless will shut down. Though Dobie appeared to be in no distress, one experienced in reading dog body language would have seen his signals. His head was down, his ears were tensely held close to his head, the whites were showing in his eyes, and his tail was held clamped down. Feeling cornered and with no way to express it, he panicked and bit the hand that he perceived as attacking him.

Not only does correction inhibit the dog's way of communicating his discomfort, the owner's tone and body language exacerbate it. To the dog, the child's approach not only makes him nervous, it causes his owner to tense up and yell. This is powerful confirmation to the dog whose owner is his whole world that his fears are well-founded.

Heal the cause, not the symptom

Fortunately, due to modern research in behavioral science, more humane and effective ways of dealing with aggressive acts have been developed. These methods are grounded in the use of
desensitization and counter conditioning. On the Clicker Train USA website, it states: "We want to counter condition our fearful dog to accept other dogs. By combining counter conditioning and desensitization we can accomplish that. We will start exposing our dog to other dogs at a very low level - in this case a far enough distance (that's the densensitization part). In addition, we will give the dog very tasty treats when he sees the other dogs (that's the counter conditioning part). Gradually, we can convince the dog that other dogs mean good treats."

Leslie McDevitt, MLA, CDBC, CPDT took this concept one step further when she developed the Look At That (LAT) game detailed in her book, "Control Unleashed." Previously counter
conditioning protocols required the dog to look away from the aversive stimuli (person or dog that frightened him). With this method, the dog is actually rewarded for looking AT the object
of fear. The result is that the dog starts to seek opportunities to look at, and even eventually approach, the object that used to cause him to growl, lunge, or snap. Instead of thinking, "uh oh, here comes something scary," his response changes to "oh yay, here comes something that makes GOOD things happen!"

Kellie Snider, MS, the Manager of Animal Behavior Programs at the SPCA of Texas, developed Constructional Aggression Treatment (CAT) as her graduate thesis under the direction of behavior analyst Jesus Rosales-Ruiz, PhD. In this revolutionary treatment, the dog is rewarded for calm behavior by allowing him to increase his distance from the feared object. Since it's
very important that the dog be kept below his fear threshhold at all times, the procedure requires that the initial distance be easy for the dog to handle, therefore helping to increase his
feeling of safety when in the vicinity of the person or dog that frightens him.

On her website Kellie states, "In the CAT procedure we use the reinforcer the dog is already working for. It is usually distance from the aversive stimuli. In our treatment we provide
the outcome he wants only when he behaves in safe, friendly ways." As with the LAT method, there is an additional benefit that is not a result of procedures using corrections. "But a

Local Orlando area help

If your dog is displaying aggressive behavior, you need to see a trainer/behaviorist who is both a practitioner of dog-friendly methods based in modern behavioral science and also experienced with aggression issues.

If these issues aren't addressed, it could result in a human or other dog receiving a serious bite. One of our local behaviorists is Belinda DeLaby, CBC, CPDT, the owner of Canine Action, Inc. in Oviedo. Belinda has been training dogs for 15 years and has extensive experience dealing with aggression.

Other resources for finding a good trainer who has the necessary experience and education in modern methods for aggression issues can be found at the bottom of the page of the Helpful Links page of the Dog Willing website. These listings include Orlando area trainers and behaviorists, but also list international resources.

What can you do?

Meanwhile there are several important things that you, the owner, should do if your dog is displaying aggressive behaviors towards a human or other dog:

If you suddenly come upon an aversive stimuli (something that makes your dog react aggressively), STAY CALM. He will be taking his cues from you. Keep breathing, keep your voice calm and cheerful, and take him out of the situation as quickly and nonchalantly as you can. If possible, don't put any tension on his leash - that tension travels right through him.

Call your local experienced positive behaviorist as soon as possible and make an appointment for evaluation.

Lastly, don't assume that just because your dog is displaying aggressive behaviors, you have an aggressive dog. He is not a bad dog, he is a dog with a problem that can very often be resolved with the right behavioral modification therapy.

Tucker: Loving the Best Life!

It's been a while since we've sent an update on our Tucker-man, so we thought we'd let Col. Potter know Tucker's doing just swell. He's been here in his furever home now for over 2.5 years, and we just don't know what we'd do without him. He and his Westie sister Zoe keep us entertained and busy!

Tucker has come a long way since that fall day we picked him up from his foster mom, Stacey. He still has some fears - we suppose he will always have, but he's a sweet, friendly little guy who loves his walks, trips to the pet store and most of all - Mommy's homemade treats. This boy LOVES to eat! Tucker's going to experience his first vacation in September when we take him and Zoe to the Smoky Mtns. We can't wait!

We'd like to thank Col. Potter once again for inspiring us to get involved in rescue. We are volunteers with Westie Rescue of TN and often have a foster Westie in our home, as we do right now. Tucker's been very accepting of the fosters, and he and Zoe have been a great help in showing the little rescues the ropes.

Were it not for Col. Potter we wouldn't have our precious Tucker and we wouldn't have found the joy we've found in rescue. There is nothing like seeing the gratitude in the eyes of a little rescue when you clean him up, give him a soft bed, good food, plenty of fresh, clean water and love. As you all know, rescue is hard work but it is SO rewarding.

Thank you to all the volunteers who give SO much of themselves so that little Cairns just like Tucker can live the good life just like Tucker is.

Princess Leia is All Stars!

Dear wonderful Cairn folks,

This is my first post. I haven't written or had much time to read (thank you, economy!) so please forgive my lurkiness.

I'm posting because we celebrated a really big anniversary last Monday - the one year adoption of our Cairn delight, Princess Leia (was Bangles). I wish you could see me sitting here, all beaming and smiling, because this frightened little PM mommy has transformed into the most dearest, darlingest doggie, an absolute joy, such a snuggly bundle of affection and love that we can't imagine how we lived without her.

Bangles came into our lives on July 18, 2010 from the excellent foster home of Kitty K. She joined a Cairn brother, Wookie named for Chewbacca, so she became Princess Leia. Leia spent her first week hiding in my closet. She didn't have the strength to jump six inches, was terrified of that big wide green expanse we called a lawn, recoiled from our college-age children, and promptly lost her house training.

Fast forward one year. Leia not only jumps three feet high (four if we have treats), she and Wookie run around the house wrestling all over the place, especially the bed. She adores laps and asks all of the family members for a turn, including the young adults. Leia is a nighttime snugglepuss, in contrast to Wookie, who won't stay on the bed because we disturb his beauty sleep. We fenced in the yard, and it is her big playground and fortress - all potential invaders are soundly warned not to come further! Wookie, Leia and I go for daily walks, and she has plenty of energy and strength for our once-a-week 5 miler. She is very trainable because (no surprise) she LOVES treats. Our current training project is "not freaking out when people are at the front door" (a tough one!). And she blisses out riding around with Dad in the car.

I've (hopefully) attached pictures I took yesterday. Isn't Leia a doll? :)

Thank you for all of the work you do on behalf of Cairns everywhere. Thanks to you, all of our lives, Leia's especially, are immeasurably better than they were one year ago.

Today is Gilly's 11th birthday

Today is Gilly's 11th birthday. I can't believe that I've had him for 11 years! So far today he's not a happy boy......who gets groomed on their birthday he wants to know?? He still looks like a yak but a much neater one! So then he got a Wagatha's treat (had to share with Chloe)--again not happy about the sharing part! The poor little guy is under the dining room table safe from that grooming madwoman! So I guess we'll have to have a special treat at dinner (salmon ought to do the trick!) He's the one that helped me find that AOL cairn list 11 years ago...what to do with a cairn terrier puppy??!! And I'm still learning! Happy Birthday to my little guy!

A Loving Tribute to Edy da Sweetie

The entire Col. Potter family was saddened to learned that cairn imp "Edy da Sweetie what likes to bite tweeties" left for the Rainbow Bridge this weekend.

Here is what her grieving mother wrote:

The vets could not get her blood pressure up, and last night, she passed in her sleep. Thank you all for your prayers. I know she's in heaven with Rest, Frankie and Old Ben. I'm sure Delli came to greet her - she's not alone, but she's putting them all in order.

She met every male foster we ever had with a bite on his tweetie and a smack of her butt in his face. They knew who was in charge from minute one. She's the one who scaled the 5 ft high brick wall to be with her mom. She and Miss Maggie ze Bichon were like salt and pepper - two mischievous girlys hard at play. I know Miss Mags will miss her. Flynn will be lonely - Edy was the only one who could keep up - even run faster than he runs.

The reason she was president of the NGA was NOT because of tweetie biting - although that helped.

Long ago, one very snowy winter, a squirrel dared be on our deck. I opened the slider, she bolted out - after the squirrel, ducked UNDER THE DECK RAIL and went full speed off the end of my deck - it's like 5 ft in the air.... she landed about 3 ft out - thank goodness she landed on a huge snow pile.I could have killed her right then and there....

John woke up early and prayed that Edy could have peace. That's really all we wanted - life if possible, but peace as well. She was only 10. It was in finding her, I found Col Potter - and more than 30 fosters made their way to new homes - with her 'training'.

Just last month, when we adopted Darby, we laughed at how Edy was the perfect cairn. Only she would back away from a groundhog cause her daddy told her to. And she was perfect - an imp and scallywag - in every way but longevity.

Dont take your pets for granted - give them a hug. Edy was our second youngest and this came out of the blue.

Thanks for all your prayers, I know I have to accept this, its just very hard.

Rook's Happy Ever After

Col Potter is an awesome organization and I wanted to share our happy ever after story with you. A year ago, we adopted Rook when she was 10 months old rom Col Potter.

She is a wonderful, loving, playful, intelligent, sweet, beautiful dog. She is a joy and we love her dearly. You could not ask for a better little girl. She loves to play with stuffed or unstuffed soft toys and always has one in her mouth or near by and runs around the yard with a toy in her mouth.

She also loves to go for walks and will happily step into her harness one paw at a time for the pleasure of going on an outing. She has excellent walking manners except when a squirrel races by or a bunny hops across the way or a bird dares to land nearby.

Rook became fast friends with Bilbo, our male Cairn who is over 13 years old. Bilbo tires easily and Rook's energy was unstoppable so we decided Rook would flourish with another playmate closer to her age. We adopted another female Cairn who was 6 months old and her Mom and Dad did not want her because she was a handful with boundless energy. Rook looks out for her fursibs and they play for hours on end. The girls wrestle with Bilbo like little pups with their Mom. They do play bows and jump over him and sit on their haunches and bat him in the face and he plays back. He is almost twice their size, but he is very gentle with them and lays on the floor and lets them climb all over him and gently mouths them pulling at their ears. The girls look out for Bilbo and let him nap when he is tired, but when it is dinner time, they wake him up. When it is time for a walk, they call him to get his leash on. It is so sweet.

Because Cairns are such wonderful dogs and bring such much joy into our home we went back to Col Potter and adopted Jaden (aka Spinach) an 8 month old female. Jaden has fit perfectly into our family. She is sweet and loving, beautiful, inquisitive and full of energy and gets into everything. She loves to explore. The dogs all get along fantastically. They play and wrestle together and chase each other around the yard. They also dig holes together. We are not sure what they are looking for, but the 4 dogs dig together so they must be smelling something in the dirt or they are trying to dig their way to China(LoL!!) Jaden loves nylabones and balls. She loves to throw the ball in the air and runs and chases it. The other furkids now play with the balls that had been laying dormant in the yard. I guess Jaden was taught what to do with a ball. When we go for our daily walk, Jaden walks side by side with Rook. At first Jaden was afraid of vehicles and noises, but with Rook at her side, Jaden is now enjoying the adventures we go on each day. Ron walks in front with the Rook and jaden and I wlak in back with Bilbo and Georgie and both Jaden and Rook look back to be sure we do not get lost.

Col Potter is a wonderful oganization that has helped so many Cairns. We want to thank the organization for bringing these wonderful dogs into our homes and enriching our lives. Each and every volunteer makes a huge difference in the life of a dog. God bless you all.

It's 4th of July weekend and many cities and municipalities are having their fireworks displays. The weekend will be filled with picnics and parties too. All that excitement adds up to a lot of fun - but it also represents a lot of potential dangers for your dog.

The most common dog owner complaint during the 4th of July weekend is their dog's reaction to fireworks. The combination of loud noises and bright lights can scare dogs that don't normally have a history of noise phobias.

Some dogs will exhibit signs of fear that can include pacing, panting, trembling, salivating, trying to escape and/or barking. Many dogs will actually injure themselves when trying to escape. (I've even seen dogs that had been hit by a car trying to flee from noises.)

What can you do to help keep your dog calm during the fireworks? Here are some tips.

1. Don't take your dog to the fireworks. Make sure he or she is calm at home. Or stay home with your dog during the fireworks. Keep your dog confined in a comfortable location if possible.

2. Don't try too hard to reassure your dog during a fearful event with petting, soothing words, or extra attention as this can sometimes exacerbate the problem by reinforcing your dog's fearful response.

3. Some dogs are very sensitive to peoples' moods, so they may be influenced by the way that you react to the noise. It is best to act happy and upbeat or to redirect your dog's attention to some absorbing activity.

4. If you must leave your dog alone, consider what would make your dog most comfortable. Bring your dog indoors. Would your dog feel safest in a crate? Turn on the radio/television/fan/air conditioner as ("white noise"). Make sure you provide a comfortable hiding place or "safe place" in case your dog is scared during the fireworks.

Here's a great update from Jaden's (fka Spinach) furever family:

Good morning - just wanted to share with all that Jaden's left ear is now standing straight up and she is looking gorgeous with her thick fur growing out. She looks very different, but still very striking with her brindle coloring sprinkled across her wheaten colored face.

She is such a sweetheart and so smart and so good natured. She learns tricks very quickly, in fact, just by watching the others do it. When I first wanted to teach her to 'sit pretty' (on the haunches with the front paws bent in a begging type position) , I had Bilbo do 'pretty' then the other 2 girls did 'pretty' and when I got to Jaden, she did 'pretty' without any coaching. It was amazing!

The same with with teaching her how to lay down and wait and all the other commands. The others did the tricks first and she copied and remembered. When I get her alone she knows how to do all the tricks and loves to do them.

Of course. I give them treats for tricks and she is definitely a little piglet and will do anything for a treat or some love’n. She loves to eat and loves to be patted and have her belly rubbed and ears scratched. Jaden's favorite thing now is going for a walk. When we ask the furkids if they want to go for a walk, Jaden is the first one to the mud room. She gets to the mud room where the leashes are kept and sits and waits for us to put her harness and leash on her. We have all the dogs wait while we put the harnesses and leashed on each one in turn. They wear their collars all the time, but when we walk we put the harnesses on them. She and all the dogs sit patiently waiting for us to open the exterior door and give the command to go through the open door.

We are amazed by how quickly she has picked up all the commands and because she has such a strong desire to please, she obeys faster then anyone else. She is a joy as is all the furkids. The other furkids love Jaden and they play and play and play. It is comical to see everyone zoomin’ across the yard with a stuffed toy in their mouths as if to say chase me, chase me, chase me and of course they chase each other up and down the yard and back and forth and wrestle.

Jaden and Ron now have a game. He squirts the hose and Jaden and Georgi try to catch the water in mid air. They jump and snap at the flowing water. We also put a little wash tub in the yard and all the dogs play in that. Jaden splashes the water with her paw and then tries t catch the moving water. She ends up drenched. In the summer heat I am sure this keeps her cool. Anyway, just wanted to share the fact that her ear is standing up straight and she looks impressive.

Thanks again Col Potter for Jaden and Rook - two very special Cairns that have enriched our lives beyond words.

The Very Real and Threatening Danger of Fire Ants!

I first saw this post on the Scratchings n Sniffings Blog. The original posting is from an Alachua County resident and pet owner. Alachua County is in Central Florida, near Gainesville, and less than two hours from Jacksonville/St. Augustine where I live. I know fire ants and I exterminate them as soon as I notice them. But they crop up pretty quickly and can be missed in grassier areas. I know that I hate them, but I did not know all that is described below. But as the Blogger writes thru her own tragedy, better to post in the hopes that it will prevent another.

We bring our pets to the vet and we listen and learn about ways to protect them from the outdoor and indoor dangers to pets. What to make sure to keep them from, plants that could make them sick or potentially kill them. The dangers of Fleas and Ticks and Worms…. Has your vet ever warned you about the dangers of FIRE ANTS?

Until very recently I had no idea how vicious and dangerous FIRE ANTS were to our pets. I knew that they would bite and cause the pets to be very itchy and enough bites could make them feel sick however, I had no clue they KILL. Yes, I said KILL your PETS. I am writing to warn EVERYONE to keep a close eye on your dogs and cats that roam free outside. Even if only for a few minutes.

Last night my daughter called me all upset because Fire Ants consumed her puppy. I rushed over and we brushed off what we thought was all of the ants. I sprayed the entire dogs area and around the house. When I went back inside Chaos looked very sick. I told my daughter he didn’t look good something was wrong. Chaos was just laying there in the corner of the couch. We assumed the bites made him sick to his stomach. Later after he became violently ill we knew there was more to the story. We called and found a pet rescue friend that met us half way and we worked on Chaos for an hour… I am going to tell you what we learned. TOO LATE for Chaos however, perhaps OUR story will save another.

Fire Ants are vicious little creatures. They not only bite they sting and leave stingers. These stingers are full of poison (I didn’t know they were poison). Even though we got the ants off, they left these stingers and the poison inside the stingers kept injecting into Chaos little body. The lady showed us what we thought were dirt specks as he enjoyed rolling in the dirt after a bath were in fact Ant stingers. We rushed to get them all out. However, with all our efforts Chaos passed away.
PLEASE watch your pets closely, if you see fire ant mounds in your yard destroy them right away. Fire Ants emit a chemical signal when they are in danger that alerts the other ants to attack. If your dog is attached IMMEDIATELY REMOVE him from the dangerous area and follow the instructions below:

1. Brush all the ants off the dog, remember to check his eyes, ears and mouth DO NOT USE A WATER HOSE this will make the ants bite down harder, be SURE to get the stingers out.
2. Apply after-bite liquid or moisten a cotton ball with pure ammonia and dab onto the ant bites to relieve itch
3. Mix baking soda and water into a paste and apply to the affected area(s) for 20 minutes;
4. Wash the ant bites with antibacterial soap for two minutes
5. Apply anti-itch cream or spray like Benadryl.
6. Apply cold compresses to reduce itching and swelling

If your dog seems lethargic do not assume it is because he had just been through a lot… GET HIM TO A VET. Watch his gums… are they pink or are they turning white… Chaos gums where white as paper by the time we found a vet to see him. The bites could have been too much for his body to handle.

If you have done all the above and everything looks good just make sure to wash the bite areas with antibacterial soap a couple times a day, apply betadine to the bites, then anti itch spray or cream. Then apply cool compresses to the area during these treatment times. Watch for infection. Staff is a common infection with these types of bites. If it is red, swelling and there is discharge… Visit your vet.

Be sure to have all the above materials available at all times if you are a pet owner. Your immediate fire aid care is what will save your pets life. Always be cautious of ant mounds, especially after rain. Always have an emergency stash of at least $100-$150 for an emergency vet as they will refuse to see you without full payment.

Little Dottie's Dollar is on her way to her forever home and happily, it's just a short drive away!

A very special Col. Potter member, Kaaren J, is known for her gorgeous Iris gardens. Each year Kaaren opens her gardens to the public and sells some of her prized Irises. Last year Kaaren offered some Irises for sale to raise donations for Col. Potter. A couple stopped at the sale along with their young daughter, Dottie. She had been given a dollar to spend as she wished. Dottie chose to donate her dollar to help the rescued cairns of Col. Potter. What a wonderful heart and soul this beautiful young girl has! Summer Road Trips with Your Pet

Many people go on road trips with their pets during the summer. Pet friendly hotels are more common than ever so it can be a good idea to bring your dog or cat with you on vacation if you are worried about leaving them home.

Here are some suggestions and ideas from the Doctors and Staff at Long Beach Animal Hospital (California)

I made a few personal edits to make this article even more relevant to the Col. Potter family. And of course, I found a new-to-me blog that looks very interesting!

Before the trip starts:

Get your dog or cat used to the carrier or crate they will be in during the trip.
Go online and find pet friendly hotels and attractions. They are increasing in number and available throughout the country.
Make a basic first aid kit you would use for yourself.
Take a list of 24 hours emergency hospitals along your route, along with the phone number of your family veterinarian; include Photocopies of medical records to expedite treatment in case of an emergency.
Ask your veterinarian for a recommended hospital at your destination.
If you pet is prone to car sickness do small rides prior to your road trip and see if this conditioning helps. Your veterinarian has tranquilizers that stop motion sickness and vomiting. Give one on a trial basis several days before the trip to see the effect and how long it lasts.
Get your pet micro-chipped and have a collar with ID on it at all times, including rabies information. Your phone number should also be on the ID. Bring a current photo of your pet in case it gets lost and you need to put up posters.
Remember that the Col. Potter Tag Program provides away from home coverage. If you are traveling with or without your pet, you can provide temporary information about where you can be contacted should your pet go missing. This could make the difference in being reunited with your pet if you are traveling with them. Having only your home information in this situation could cost huge delays in locating you. Make sure vaccines are current because you cannot predict exposure to sick animals, and pet friendly hotels usually require them. If you are going into a poisonous snake area talk to your veterinarian about rattlesnake vaccines.
Bring vaccine records, including rabies, if you cross state lines. Some states require health certificates, which can be obtained from your veterinarian.
If your pet is on medication bring extra if feasible in case of delay in returning home.
Start flea products that also protect from Heartworms (spread by mosquitoes which are prevalent in much of the country in the summer) and also internal parasites (worms).

During the trip:

Never leave pet in a parked car even with the windows cracked open.
Keep the car cool with the air conditioner on, especially for the dogs that have difficulty breathing routinely (Pugs, Bulldogs, etc.).
Even though they seem to love it, minimize your dog hanging his head out of the window. Flying objects (insects) and kicked up debris can injures eyes and ears.
Never leave pet in a parked car even with the windows cracked open.
Bring your own food and also water in containers. This is more convenient than trying to find it and might help minimize diarrhea or vomiting if your pet drinks water it is not used to. Bringing favorite toys.
If you drive in the morning give a meal the night before so they travel on a relatively empty stomach during the daytime. Adjust this feeding schedule as needed depending on what time you leave and how long you will be driving.
Never leave pet in a parked car even with the windows cracked open.
Stop every 2-4 hours for your dog to relieve himself and get a drink of water.
Use car safety seats and harnesses - available on the Cairn Mall, at most pet stores and online.

Emma and Gracie: Therapy Dogs in Training

I went to Darlene's facebook page and pulled this link to her dogs' PHOTOS.

Circle is Emma, and Cube - the little Chihuahua looking cairn girl - is Gracie. They were adopted last year in October, and they are in training to be part of Darlene's therapy pet program.

Isn't it great to know that these little girls that were virtually "cast aways" from a breeder now not only have a mom who loves them, but an extended family of volunteers who help her take care of her dogs, getting them back and forth to the hospital, and working with patients who love on them all day while they're at the hospital?

I think she had these pics taken early this year, so the girls are a little bigger now than these pics. . . . . . .

Patti cracks me up. She walks like a Princess with her back legs going one in front of the other. She loves to snap at bugs flying in the air, sometimes I think the bugs are invisible because I don't see them! She is loving and funny.

Little Fletcher still shows a little bit of fear at certain things but I do believe in time, the fear will disappear and he will be just as funny and loving as my Patti-Cake.

They both love the other animals and love roaming the big, back yard.

Patti is eight years old and Fletcher is 7. Seniors rock! I love them so very much.

Fearless and Friendly: Poppy fka Cress

Poppy fka Cress is very happy, loves to meet other dogs on her walks, affectionate, and now housebroken. Her Mom said tongue in cheek that she had to be careful telling me that on the phone because "Poppy was listening".

Her Mom also said: We just returned from a walk on the local rail trail where Poppy made friends with a large Doberman. She has no fear on any dog - large or small. We were also able to pass on info re the Col. Potter organization to a family walking with their children - maybe they will find their forever Cairn the way I did

Here's a recent pic of my little angel who was rescued from a Kansas PM in October 2006. Lulu is now 4 1/2 yrs a Cairnadian! I haven't sent any pics lately, so thought the group might like to see again the little goof I talk about.

The pic is of my sweet girl snoozing the day I got the results of her ultrasound. She is 11yrs and 5 months old.

Lulu started a 7 day induction phase of Lysodren therapy 2 days ago for Cushings Syndrome. One thing I'm learning is that Cushings isn't a death sentence...it can't be cured, but it CAN be managed and a dog can lead a normal life and return to a better self. It's sure a steep learning curve though!!!

Pappy is so Very Happy in Montana!

One year ago, a CRAP – Cairn Rescue Annual Party – was being held in Missouri. And it was Father's Day weekend with lots of people in attendance, and many more visiting virtually. When you take Col. Potter people and add a holiday, the natural result is a celebration ceremony – this one centered around those great Cairn Dads and Foster Dads.

During the presentation, a promise was made that the next mill dog daddy that came into CP would be named “PAPPY” and that “he will be yours – each and every one of you."

Well shortly after, that promise was kept and this handsome shy boy came to be a Col. Potter kid. Pappy was lovingly fostered By Gina K in Kansas.

Susan and Jeff B, Pappy's furever family in Montana, recently sent us this great update:

I would love to report on our boy Pappy. WOWWWW! Where do I start? When he first came to us, he was horribly afraid of anything and everything; the slightest squeak, wind blowing, the klink of a fork on a dish; He would run and try to hide when I came in the door.
There were moments when I thought he could never be a loving, happy boy- but we didn’t give up and Pappy has turned the corner.

He is happy, and loving. His fears are being conquered little by little and he is an absolute joy and love of my life. He sleeps between my husband and me- along with 2 other Cairns whom he adores. I cook for 2 of the 3 dogs, the third - Tessy has chronic kidney and liver disease.

He just had His new Summer haircut- I went to the groomer and stayed with him-held him- most of the time. It worked out great because it became a non-threatening situation. I know we will get another”Pappy” from Colonel Potter in the future.

Pappy is in his forever after home and we are so very fortunate to have him in our Life. He brings joy and happiness to me every day and now - finally - we're bringing that to his life.

Mom messed up her foot and she can't take us for a walk so she ordered us outside to have fun and run around.

Mickey has a "Staycation"

Hope all is well. We just got back from vacation yesterday afternoon. Every year we go to the Americade motorcycle event held in New York State. We got to meet up with old friends and make new friends also.

My daughter came down from Ma. to watch Mickey and Sony. She has three dogs also. Mickey did great while we were away. My daughter said he is one of the best behaved dogs she has ever seen. She was able to bring Mickey in with the other dogs and everybody got along just fine. We did call three times a day to check on how things were going, I guess because we missed Mickey and Sony. They were so happy to see us when we got back.

Mickey has really settled in just fine. I'm sure he knows this is his forever home. His favorite thing is playing ball and we play everyday sometimes fetch and sometimes catch. He loves to sit and look out the front bay window and has learned that he can jump up to the dining room window sill to look out the side of the house. Check out the attached picture. He also has figured out what time I get home from work and goes to the front to wait for me. I just love this little guy. We are so lucky to have him.

We want to thank everyone from Colonel Potter for helping make the adoption of Mickey possible. I will be in touch soon.

McIntyre has a Forever Family

After a bump in the road, McIntyre is now home with his forever family. His original adoption date was to be a couple weeks ago, but the morning after it was set up he became ill with diahrrea. A quick trip to the vet and the adoption was put on hold while he took his meds and recovered. Within a day or two he was back to normal, but his new folks had some family commitments so they finally got to have their boy last Sunday. He will be an only dog and will probably have a name change. "Mac" is too close to the name of their Westie Max, now at the Rainbow bridge, so it may be Doc or Doc McIntyre.

I finally got Leroy's picture from his major win that gave him his championship and wanted to share it with you (took me a day to get it scanned into the computer). I wish you could see him in real time as his coat is actually much more of a darker auburn coloring and his face is actually a charcoal grey - the lights seem to bring out the lighter look on every picture I get of him.

Huxley Flies to His Furever Family

This morning Huxley started his journey to his new family taking his first airplane ride ever on Delta. When we got to the airport there were no lines so it looked like it was going to be a piece of cake! The agent started the check in process only to have a computer blip freezing up the airbill. When she called for assistance the phone went dead. A line started to form but Huxley and I kept our cool. And it was already nearly 80 degrees at 8:30 a.m.!! After 40 minutes everything was in order and it was time for the 'inspection'. As the crate was being inspected, I was holding Huxley (still being a good boy). When the frazzled agent looked up from the crate, Huxley growled over the displeasure of the wait. I was so glad he said something so I didn't have to (LOL). Delta changed his plane after the layover in Detroit and called his new family to let them know he was in early when he reached Providence RI. Huxley will be living in MA with his new mom, dad, 18 y/o son and grandparents. He will be an only dog getting all the attention which is what he loves!

Here's some pictures of the little grumble butt. He especially liked his CP blanket from Aunt Stacie - it matches him and his bed perfectly! I hope to have photos of him with his new family soon. Thanks Matchmaker Lisa B for helping Huxley find his new family!!

Kisu Kisses Seal the Deal

Yesterday Kisu's new mom drove here from IL to meet and pick up her new girl. Kisu's new cairn brother Riley also came along to meet fursib. Kisu's mom was smitten by her and I think the deal was sealed for Kisu after a few scritches and treats from her new mom.

As you can see from the pictures, Kisu crawled in mom's lap and didn't move until it was time to leave.

Riley showed little interest in his new sister other than a few sniffs, but I got lots of kisses from him:)

It is strange how the house can seem much emptier with only one less, even though my five kids are still here.

Ramsay Plays Ball and Shows His Cairnitude!

Ramsay is great. He loves chasing the tennis ball in his new backyard. During the week we get up around 5:45 and go for a nice walk (getting much better on his leash). He eats his breakfast and we have a little play time in the living room (he doesn't like the wet grass early in the morning).

I leave for work around 7 and I put him in his crate with some toys and his kong with Peanut Butter. He has been very good in his crate so far. When I get home around 4, I take him out in the yard and he does his business and we play a little ball. Unfortunetly it has been really hot here, so he doesn't last too long.

Then he has dinner and a treat. I have been still giving him a half cup in the morning and half cup in the evening. When it begins to cool off in the late evening we either go for a nice walk or play in the backyard. That usually tires him out. So that is pretty much our routine each day. I have to keep an eye him at all times however, he likes to grab pretty much anything he can get his mouth on, I just distract him with a toy. Everything is great so far. He's my little buddy. He has been sleeping in his crate every night. Have a great weekend.

Run Free Little Hawthorne!

Hawthorne is a CP boy who spent the first 7 years of his life in a puppymill. We just celebrated his 15th birthday three weeks ago. Hawthorne is the reason I became actively involved with Col. Potter. He was absolutely the most frightened and terrified little dog I have ever met. His journey to freedom continued every day right up until today. Now he will be completely free of his fears and his demons, but mostly from his physical body that has failed him on so many levels. I want to picture in my mind, Hawthorne as a puppy, running, playing and rolling in the tall, cool grass and doing all the things puppies do and get into. Something Hawthorne never had a chance to do as a puppy. I want him to lose all his inhibitions and take that final step to total freedom.

The last 4 years Hawthorne has suffered from kidney failure, an enlarged heart, a faulty heart valve, Cushings disease and a rapid growth tumor on his eye resulting in the having to be enucleated. Through it all, Hawthorne has enjoyed his walks, his food, laying in the yard in the fresh air, and yes, finally be loved. Now his kidneys have finally totally shutdown and Hawthorne has stopped eating and for the most part stopped drinking water.

Please indulge me in a little poem I wrote for my boy:

You came to us

A broken, frightened little boy.

Didn't know what freedom was

Or what to do with a toy.

Slowly, you blossomed and bloomed

While overcoming your demons and fears.

Over time you learned to run, bark and roll in the grass

Hawthorne was becoming a Cairn, it was clear.

Eight wonderful years we had to share

Not near as much as you deserved or long enough

But more years spent in freedom

Than those in the mill that were so tough.

Today your mama's heart is breaking

I know you will be waiting for me.

Until we meet again

McDuffy's Memorial Day Photo

From Karen O in Yuma AZ: I wanted to share a couple I took of McDuffy by himself in front of the flag. He is such a good boy, putting up with all of the girls' antics. McDuffy was my first CP adoptee. He was being fostered up in Medford, OR, so I flew up there, stayed the night with his foster mom, and flew back home with him. I think it created a special bond between the two of us, as he's always been a momma's boy.

Henry Ready for His Next Best Life!

Saturday, we got up at 3:30am to get the pack here fed a light breakfast and pottied, and we packed up the van with 3 of our kids AND HENRY C - it was his special day! We drove through rain and drizzle and April-like weather (was forecast to be a high of 82, but we only saw 69 degrees, and that was for a few short miles) to Iowa City, IA. Joe and Michelle, Henry's new parents, drove from St. Paul to meet us there, halfway for us both. We met at a park where we could get the kids out on a grassy area, and because of the weather, there were few people there, so it was a quiet and wonderful spot to meet.

Joe and Michelle are two of the warmest, quietest, calmest people I've ever met. And it was obvious they had already fallen in love with Henry. We handed them Henry's leash, and they let him come to them on his own accord (which for outgoing Henry, greeting them took only a few seconds). We let the kids investigate the new smells and wander around while we talked. We had to laugh - Henry's bandanna - even though I'd rolled it a few times to make it smaller - became like a sling for his left front foot as he kept stepping into it and catching his foot, so he'd hobble around until one of us saw him caught and released it. We took our pics and then took his bandanna off so Henry could maneuver more easily. Michelle asked about grooming, and I'd taken my favorite tools - a pin brush for just quick clean-ups, a metal comb, my 32 tooth Mars, and a regular bristle brush for the last brush to catch any hair that's clinging. I showed her how to use them on one of our kids that I hadn't done anything with in quite a while, and she'll be purchasing the Mars and probably the comb off the Mall :-)

Joe and Michelle are both professionals - no children - and Henry will be their first dog since they married, and their first Cairn! They'd done their research on breeds and decided that the Cairn's energetic personality was the dog for them and their active lifestyle, and they wanted to do the right thing and adopt a rescue dog. Henry's the perfect dog for them as even though he came from a breeder, he's young and few little mill issues. For such a young dog, he can be a little lover, spending time on your lap to get loved on, in between finding things to entertain himself (stealing items from a low trash can, prancing thru the house with your dirty laundry, shredding a napkin left on a sofa table, relocating your shoes, etc. . . . ..LOL).

And Joe and Michelle are undaunted about his bobble head - which since he was a little stressed from the long ride, he did have a bit of a head shake a few times, so they got to see it before we'd gone. Joe works until noon during the summer, so Henry will have short days alone for a while, and they'll be able to work with completing his housetraining. We talked about the area they live in and our love of lighthouses and found they do frequent trips up the shore of Lake Superior, and they like to visit Split Rock Lighthouse, so I know a picture of Henry with Split Rock Lighthouse will be coming my way over the summer. LOL And they've told us if we ever come up their way to make sure we plan to stop and visit!

We completed the paperwork, handed his bag over to them, and it was time for us both to get on the road and start our five hour drives home. I don't believe Henry looked back - he was content in Michelle's arms and ready for the next chapter of his life :-)

And I did ask about his name. They think Henry fits him perfectly and are keeping it :-)

So Happy Forever, little Henry C! We'll miss you but know you're where you were meant to be -

Every Toto (and Darby) Needs a Dorothy

An update on Darby in Texas:

6 months ago this weekend our lives changed---Nov. 28th 2010. This marks the day we picked up Darby/Ciao ar the Dallas Airport. She flew in from Penn. where she was in Foster Care with the B's. She was rescued in October from a puppy mill, was quite confused scared. In spite of that, she has been such a WONDERFUL dog!! We can't tell you how she has changed our lives. Darby is our 4th cairn. Our last Cairn, Matty, died unexpectedly in Oct. We were shocked and sad but knew just the right dog would come along to join us in this journey called "LIFE"......

Then we found out about Col Potter and after a lot of anticipation We were told we could have Darby!!! God knew who we needed!!! She is perfect! Our 1st Cairn was Silver black Brindle, our next 2 were Wheaten; now we had come full cycle and we got Darby, a Black Brindle. She is beautiful! She is so dark we can't see her around the house at night!!! She has learned to get out of our way so we don't trip over her!!! She is so smart and so wants to please! She looks to us as the folks she use to dream about the first 2 yrs of her life! She is our Toto dog and we are her Dorothy!!!

She does well at the Groomers and loves to be brushed and thinned with the comb from Col. Potter. She has been groomed 3 times and some golden fur is peaking through her black fur....so pretty!!!

Darby found out it DOES snow in Texas !!! She finds it very COLD and is very curious about it!:

Darby loves to nap on sheets and blankies which we, of course, keep in every room of the house!

She LOVES her bones and spends a lot of time chewing on them and laying on her couch blankie! She will chew on one for awhile and spend the rest of the night running all over the house finding a safe place to bury it. Moving it from place to place!!

She LOVES her backyard and plays with the squirrels and birds! She is very polite she will NOT scratch at the door to come in....instead she will sit 3-5 feet away from the door and wait patiently for us to notice!! And she doesn't feel like she has to bark at the neighbor dogs or the wind. Our other Cairns were very scared of storms--you would think the world was coming to an end! NOT DARBY!!! Rain, Wind, Thunder, Lightening even Tornadoes----NO BIG DEAL !!! WE LOVE THAT!!!!!! She even takes the yard guys in stride!! I guess the main thing that gets her barking is the doorbell and she is still a little nervous with people coming into the house. MUCH better than at first!

Darby's most important job is chasing the squirrels between the tree and the fence. The squirrels yap at her and tease her all day!! She finally decided the best way was easier to just sit under the tree to "stay in control" of those squirrels!

Our daughter's cairn, Presley, spent the weekend 2 weeks ago, and they spent a lot of time looking out her favorite window and spotting the squirrels in the backyard.

Darby is so loving and doesn't take her new home for granted. She greets us every time we come home or even come into the room with kisses. She has the funniest way of getting our attention---she will CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP her teeth together REALLY loud!! It's Hilarious!!! and Yes it does get the attention she is looking for!!! She also dances on her back feet and flaps her front paws! That works too!! She loves to cuddle, have her tummy rubbed and her unconditional love is truly a Blessing!! We humans should be dogs sometimes!!

Once again, THANK YOU COL POTTER FOR ALL YOU DO and FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE DARBY A HOME!!
